Burning Questions for 21st Century Christians

Sermon III: "Whose Side is God On? A Theology of Politics"

Texts: Galatians 5:13-15; Matthew 22:15-22

FLOWERS THIS SUNDAY

The flowers are given by Linda and Art Sweum in celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

TODAY’S ANTHEM

During a residency at Holden Village, a retreat center in the state of Washington, composer Marty Haugen wrote You Are Salt for the Earth to be used as a “processional song” for outdoor worship. The lectionary readings of their worship focused on Jesus’ teaching about the “reign of God,” providing the basis for the text.

GOODBYE TO MS. ALICIA

Join us in extending our thanks and best wishes to Alicia Wilson who completes her year with us today.  In working with our children on Sunday mornings for the past year and providing vital support for children’s programs including VBS and Mission Camp, Alicia has been a true blessing to our community.  We wish her all the best as she begins her CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) with Emory this week.

CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION

After worship today, we will have a chance to share further thoughts on the sermon topic in the Fellowship Hall. Questions and comments from you, the congregation, will be the focus.  A light lunch will be available prior to the conversation. Childcare provided in Room 105.

PASTOR ON CALL

This week, Chris Henry will be on vacation.  If a pastoral need arises during that time, Rev. Mary Miller Brueggemann is pastor on call.  You can reach Mary at 404.327.9159, mmbruegg9@gmail.com, or by calling the church office.

LEAPS AND BOUNDS

The Environmental Action Committee of MPC supports the Earth Covenant Ministry in sponsoring the Atlanta premiere performance of “Leaps and Bounds.” Please consider joining us for an evening of adventure at this one woman show, developed and performed by Tevyn East. Tevyn’s profound and moving presentation uses art to inspire the Christian church to be a prophetic witness. The show will be Tuesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. at Agnes Scott College. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and students with id. For more information, contact Sarah Tomaka, chair of MPC’s Environmental Action Committee at 404.874.3770 or sarah.tomaka@gmail.com.

DARE TO BE A DANIEL?

Please join us on Wednesday, September 8 at 7 p.m. when the small group Bible study, part of our adult education ministry, will look at the book of Daniel and how it impacts us in today’s world. The group meets in members’ homes bi-weekly, and Tony Fishpaw will host in September. For more information, contact Link Marx at fmarx25@yahoo.com or 404.323.9174.

LYDIA CIRCLE

Lydia Circle will meet Thursday, September 9 from 7-9 p.m.  For more information contact Tara Parrish at taraparrish@bellsouth.net

We are making final plans to take pictures for our very own digital church directory on Sept. 12, 19 and 26. Sign up for your five minute appointment after worship on the bulletin board next to the Session Room or by emailing the church office.

THEOLOGY ON TAP: SEASON FOUR

Men of Morningside, be sure your calendars are marked for the kickoff of Theology on Tap’s fourth season! The first gathering of the fall is set for Tuesday, September 14 at 7 p.m. We will gather at the home of Van Crisco (466 Seminole Avenue, 30307). Topic: “Personal Transformation and the God You Understand: Lessons Learned from Addiction and Recovery” with special guest Richard LaMadeleine, who is a retired Catholic priest and Director of Spiritual Counseling at Talbott Recovery Campus and Anchor Hospital in Atlanta. The food will be good and the conversation will be helpful and engaging, make plans to be there! RSVP to Chris Henry by Sunday, September 12.

HOMES (Home Owner Maintenance & Enhancement for Seniors)

We all know someone who is elderly and still living in his/her own home but has trouble with simple maintenance and yard work.  This is our opportunity to help.  We are signed up with HOMES to work Saturday, September 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  All tools will be provided and all skill levels accepted.  All we need are volunteers to help on this date. There is a sign up sheet on the mission bulletin board in the hallway at church or you can call Lloyd Prince (404.840.2710) or Jack Klotz (678.428.6255) with questions and/or confirmation.
