THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful and loving God, forgive us when we forget that you have called us by
name and created us for covenant with you. Forgive us when we forget that you
have given us a world and called it good. Forgive us when we see only an enemy in
our neighbor. Forgive us when we refuse to hear Your voice calling to
us. Transform us we pray that by our living and moving we may give evidence of
your coming kingdom. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE ANTHEM You Are Salt for the Earth, O People Marty Haugen
You are salt for the earth, O people: salt for the reign of God! Share the flavor of life, O people: life
in the City of God! Bring forth the reign of mercy, bring forth the reign of peace; bring forth the reign
of justice, bring forth the City of God! You are a light on the hill, O people: light for the City of God!
Shine so holy and bright, O people: shine for the City of God! You are a seed of the Word, O people:
bring forth the reign of God! Seeds of mercy and seeds of justice, grow in the City of God! We are a
blessed and a pilgrim people: bound for the reign of God! Share the flavor of life, O people: life in the
City of God!

THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 22:15-22 (page 23 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON Burning Questions for 21st Century Christians Christopher Henry
Sermon III: “Whose Side is God on? A Theology of Politics”
Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? Matthew 22:17

* THE HYMN 265 Great God, We Sing That Mighty Hand

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Declaration of Faith, 1985)
We believe our hope in God gives us courage for the struggle.
The people of God have often misused God’s promises
as excuses for doing nothing about present evils.
But in Christ the new world has already broken in
and the old can no longer be tolerated.
We know our efforts cannot bring in God’s kingdom.
But hope plunges us into the struggle
for victories over evil that are possible now
in the world, the church, and our individual lives.
Hope gives us courage and energy
to contend against all opposition,
however invincible it may seem,
for the new world and the new humanity
that are surely coming.
Jesus is Lord!
He has been Lord from the beginning.
He will be Lord at the end.
Even now he is Lord.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Variations on a Dutch Chorale John Bull

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 293 This Is My Father's World

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Blessed Are Wayne Watson
Blessed are the poor in spirit; God has faithfully revealed that the riches of the kingdom with their
souls in Christ are sealed. And to those of tender mercy, from them falls as gentle rain, grace and
kindness, sweet compassion; mercy given and mercy gained. Blessed are the true peacemakers,
with contentment for the fold, they cling to promises of heaven, working in the field of souls.
