WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 19, 2010
25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING Mary Miller Brueggemann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;
People: For God has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.
Leader: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in God’s holy place?
People: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, and who do not
swear deceitfully.
Leader: Now, gather us in worship, O God, our Creator. You who call us by name and
claim us in steadfast love.
-from Psalm 24
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 483 Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious and loving God, forgive us. Doing your will does not always flow
naturally. At times convention overshadows our convictions. Bad habits die
hard, and good habits form slowly. Doing your will is not always a spontaneous
choice. Your way is sometimes unclear. Your direction is often unpopular.
Create in us clean hearts, O God. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 341)
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

THE FIRST LESSON 1 Timothy 6:6-11 Katie Davis
(page 198 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM All Good Gifts William Sisson
We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty
hand. He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine,
and soft refreshing rain. All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. Thank the Lord,
O thank the Lord for all His love. God only is the maker of all things near and far. He paints the wayside
flower, He lights the evening star. The wind and waves obey Him, by Him the birds are fed.
Much more to us, His children, He gives our daily bread. We thank you, our creator, for all things
bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Accept the gifts we offer
for all your love imparts, and what you most would treasure, our humble thankful hearts.
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 18:18-23 (page 76 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON Burning Questions for 21st Century Christians Christopher Henry
Sermon V: “Is Money the Root of All Evil?”
But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich. Luke 18:23
* THE HYMN 422 God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Chansonette/Chant Pontificale Gordon Young
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 391 Take My Life (verses 1-4, 6)
