THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Lord God, forgive our feeble efforts to make you over to fit our image.
It is easier to restate your truth in easy clichés than it is to speak in words
that change minds. It is easier to rewrite your hope in easy answers than it is to
see through perplexity. It is easier to rethink your grace in easy pardon than it is
to modify our ways. By your Spirit, visit us with the full depth of your forgiveness
and make us over to fit your image. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ.
Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-year
-olds are in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in Room 003; 4th - 7th grade are attending
worship today.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 146 (page 549 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal arr. Alice Parker
Hark, I hear the harps eternal ringing on the farther shore, as I near those swollen waters,
with their deep and solemn roar. Hallelujah, praise the Lamb! Glory to the great I Am! And
my soul though stained with sorrow, fading as the light of day, passes swiftly over those waters
to the city far away. Souls have crossed before me, saintly, to that land of perfect rest, and I
hear them singing faintly in the mansions of the blest.
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 16:19-31 (page 75 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON “The Party” Rev. Dr. Fred Craddock
* THE HYMN 357 O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee
* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Brief Statement of Faith- PCUSA)
In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.
We trust in Jesus Christ,
Fully human, fully God.
Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:
preaching good news to the poor
and release to the captives,
teaching by word and deed
and blessing the children,
healing the sick
and binding up the brokenhearted,
eating with outcasts,
forgiving sinners,
and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.
With believers in every time and place,
we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Christ’s Flock Martin Shaw
In Christ’s own flock, let love be surely placed. From Christ’s own flock, let concord hate
expel. Of Christ’s own flock let love be so embraced, as we in Christ, and Christ in us may
dwell. Christ is the author of all unity from whence proceedeth all felicity. O sing unto this glittering
glorious King. Let heart and voice like bells of silver ring. Alleluia.
(dedicated by the composer to the Church of St. Francis, Ngong, Kenya)
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 281 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE The Bond of Love Skillings
