THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where will my help come?
People: Our help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Leader: The Lord is your keeper. The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
People: The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
Leader: The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on
and forevermore. Let us come in praise and adoration to worship God.
- from Psalm 121

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 139 Come, Thou Almighty King

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious and merciful God, we confess that we have failed in our ministry to others.
We listen for teachings to our own liking. We yearn for doctrines that boost
our egos. We follow those who flatter us. We seek comfort and not challenge from
our confessions of faith. Renew a right spirit within us, O God. Train us in mercy
and righteousness as you forgive our sin. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 333)
Ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find, knock and the door shall be
opened unto you. Allelu, Alleluia!

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-year
-olds are in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in Room 003; 4th - 7th grade in Room
005.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Jonah 2:2-10 (page 798 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM God Is Our Refuge Allen Pote
God is our refuge and strength, a present help in time of trouble. Though the mountains shake
in the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam, we will not fear. Come and behold the
work of the Lord, the awesome acts of God. He is in the midst of his people, in all the earth. He is
the Word, we are his hands, he will lead us. He is the air, we are his song, we will celebrate his
presence all the day long.

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 18:1-8 (page 76 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMONWhy Bother?” Christopher Henry
…yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that
she may not wear me out by continually coming. Luke 18:5

* THE HYMN 394 There Is a Balm in Gilead

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from The Iona Abbey Worship Book
We believe in God;
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the church:
to celebrate God’s presence,
to live with respect in creation,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us.
We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY And Can It Be? Campbell, arr. Lamb
Handbell Choir (James Klotz, director)
(No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; alive in Him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach th' eternal throne, and claim the crown,
through Christ my own. Amazing love! And can it be, that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?)
- text by Charles Wesley

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 411 Arise, Your Light Is Come!

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE God Is Love, His Mercy Brightens Psalmodia Sacra (1715)
God is love; his mercy brightens all the path in which we rove; bliss he wakes and woe he lightens:
God is wisdom, God is love. E'en the hour that darkest seemeth will his changeless goodness
prove; through the gloom his brightness streameth: God is wisdom, God is love.
