THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly
confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart,
nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved
kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God.
Cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit
within us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your
bountiful Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures; He will my
shield and portion be as long as life endures.

THE MINUTE MESSAGE Jennye Guy
THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 58:1-12 David York
(page 647 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Great Is Thy Faithfulness arr. Gilbert Martin
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father! There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest
not, Thy compassions, they fail not. As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be. Morning by morning new
mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer
and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all
nature in manifold witness to Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. Pardon for sin and a peace that
endureth; Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
blessings all mine, with ten-thousand beside!
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 18:9-14 (page 76 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON "The Problem with Piety" Christopher Henry
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were
righteous and regarded others with contempt...Luke 18:9
* THE HYMN 399 We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY My Shepherd Will Supply My Need Dale Wood
