Dr. Rodger Nishioka preaching

"Remember It's All About Jesus"

Texts:  Jeremiah 23:1-6; Luke 23:33-43

 _______________________________________________________________________

WELCOME DR. RODGER NISHIOKA

We are honored to welcome as guest preacher this morning Dr. Rodger Nishioka, who holds the Benton Family chair in Christian education at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. Dr. Nishioka teaches in the area of Christian education and practical theology, and is a nationally recognized leader in ministry with youth and young adults. Prior to his joining the faculty at Columbia, Dr. Nishioka served for twelve years as denominational staff in youth & young adult ministry for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He is a dynamic and powerful teacher, and a prophetic voice on the future of our faith. Dr. Nishioka has taught, lectured, preached, and led workshops all over the world, and we are fortunate to welcome him back to Morningside!

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

The Session of Morningside Presbyterian Church has called for a Congregational Meeting to be held immediately following worship on November 28, 2010 for two purposes: The first is to dissolve the call of Rev. Christopher Henry, at his request. His final Sunday at Morningside will be December 5, 2010. The second will be to act on the Pastor Nominating Committee's  recommendation of a candidate for Pastor of Morningside Presbyterian Church, and to approve that candidate's terms of call. You will not want to miss this important and exciting meeting at Morningside!

PASTOR ON CALL

If there is a pastoral emergency over the Thanksgiving holiday (Wednesday through Friday), The Reverend Glenn Small, Jr., an affiliate member at Morningside, is pastor on call. Glenn is an ordained Presbyterian minister and a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice. He can be reached at 770.414.5957 or 404.862.7340.

CHURCH RETREAT

Missing some of your friends this Sunday morning? Forty-one adults and six children are on retreat at the William Black Lodge in Montreat, North Carolina. Rev. Christopher Henry accompanied the group of Morningsiders who left Friday and will return to the city Sunday afternoon. We wish them well as they study and explore together the theme, Transitions, led by Rev. Dr. Tom Evans.

WOMEN’S ROUNDTABLE

Tomorrow’s speaker will be Katrell Christie from The Learning Tea.  After six weeks in India, buying tea and working on education for girls and women, Katrell is back to give us an update on the important things that have been happening there.  We will have dinner and conversation at the home of Amy Jarratt, 1697 N. Pelham Road, Atlanta, GA 30324 at 6:30 pm.  This will be our last meeting before the new year. RSVP to the church office at office@morningsidepc.org.

CLIFTON SANCTUARY MINISTRIES

On Saturday, November 27, MPC will serve a Thanksgiving dinner for the 30 homeless men at Clifton Sanctuary Ministries beginning at 5:30 p.m. If you can help serve or can prepare one of the dinner items, please sign up on the bulletin board outside the session room. You may also contact Tony Fishpaw at 404.597.5485 or tonyfishpaw@me.com.

NEW MEMBER SUNDAY

Are you thinking about joining Morningside Church? November 28 is a great time to do it! Plan to attend the Inquirers' Class that Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Pastor's Study. Please be in touch with Chris Henry to let him know of your interest.

CHURCH DIRECTORY PICTURES

If we still don’t have your picture for the new digital church directory, please sign up for a two minute appointment on Sundays November 28 or December 5. See the bulletin board near church office.

CALLING ALL CRAFTERS!

Help out last-minute gift shoppers by taking part in the Morningside-Made Holiday Show and Sale. All forms of handmade art are welcome and the only requirement is to donate a percentage of your proceeds to the Morningside Presbyterian Preschool.  Sale hours will be Friday, Dec. 3, from 12:30 to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. To take part, contact Daisy Ottmann, 404. 812.9725 or dazette@bellsouth.net.

CELEBRATING THE MINISTRY OF CHRIS HENRY

Please join us on Sunday, December 5 as we celebrate Chris Henry’s ministry at Morningside with a pot-luck luncheon following Chris’ farewell sermon in worship. Bring your favorite dish and a favorite story to share. We will pass the microphone around Fellowship Hall, so that all who wish to, may share a brief memory of Chris’ ministry. If you would like to contribute to a church-wide gift for Chris, make your check payable to MPC with Chris Henry gift noted on the memo line.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

On December 6, we will again be offering our Free Holiday Babysitting, an outreach to our Morningside community.  We need volunteers to assist with the children as we will be serving them dinner and providing fun holiday related activities to keep them entertained.  There are three shifts that you can sign up for: 4:40-8:15; 5:30-8:15; and 7-8:30 p.m. Contact Melinda Sandkam (msandkam@morningsidepc.org) and Doug Self (doug@jdouglasliving.com) or sign up on the bulletin board outside the church office. We do need to know how many kids to expect, so sign up today.

PARKERS AND SHUTTLE DRIVERS NEEDED

On December 12, we will have our annual Christmas Music service.  As you are all aware, this event always draws a large crowd both from our membership as well as many visitors.  As part of our Evangelism Ministry, we want to offer shuttle rides into the parking lot due to the increased traffic.  In order to do so, we need volunteers to drive and others to direct parking.  Also, if you cannot participate yourself but would like to offer your automobile that would be very helpful.  Please contact Doug Self @ doug@jdouglasliving.com.

ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK

The ACFB Canned Food Drive will run through December 12.  Help us fill up the barrels that are throughout Morningside. ACFB is in need of canned fruits, vegetables, soups, fruit juices and peanut butter. Your generosity is appreciated!

PAGEANT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The children of MPC have begun practicing for the Christmas pageant. Contact Melinda Sandkam, if you can sew a costume, help with set beforehand, or be a backstage crew member at the performance (December 19, 5 p.m.).

COOKBOOKS AND CHRISTMAS CARDS

Support the outreach programs of MPC with your purchase of a MPC Cookbook and a box of beautiful Christmas cards. Shepherds from the Mission Committee will sell these items before and after worship through December 14. The cookbooks make great hostess or teacher gifts wrapped in seasonal dish towels by the kids of Morningside. The Christmas cards share the inspirational image of our sanctuary alight with candles on Christmas Eve.

CONGRATULATIONS TO:

Nathan Lucas Dowd, son of Robert and Laetitia Dowd; Oliver James Loring, son of Jason and Julie Loring; and Jackson Gregory and Addison Carol Schreiber, son and daughter of Fred and Becky Schreiber who were baptized last Sunday, November 14.

SYMPATHY TO:

Sheryl and David Wingert on the death of Sheryl's stepmother, Nancy Koch, on November 14 in Tremont, Illinois; and to Will and Jennifer James on the death of Will's father, William James, on November 13.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

Adult Sunday School: Scripture and Song in Handel's Messiah

Throughout Advent, the adult Sunday school classes at Morningside will combine to study the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah. The class will be led by MPC member Elizabeth Rice, who has spent her life both teaching music, and singing professionally.  We will focus both on the music Handel wrote for the Messiah as well as the Biblical texts that make up the libretto. What a wonderful way to prepare for Christmas, and our special music Sunday on December 12!  Come and join us in Room 201 each Sunday morning at 9:45 am.

Children’s Classes

Today the Preschool class will learn how Eli helped young Samuel hear God in the story Samuel, Samuel! The prophet Esther is the topic for the Younger Elementary Class. Older Elementary Classes will talk about Esther’s great courage and faithfulness to God.
