Rev. Randy Calvo preaching

"There's Method in the Madness"

Text: Matthew 1:18-25

 _______________________________________________________________________

GUEST PREACHER

We welcome Rev. Randy Calvo to Morningside as our guest preacher this fourth Sunday of Advent.  Rev. Calvo is the Director of Alumni/ae and Church Relations for Columbia Theological Seminary.

PAGEANT AND CAROL SING

All are welcome to the Christmas Pageant at 5 p.m. this afternoon in Fellowship Hall.  We will then continue with a soup and chili dinner and a Carol Sing led by Walter Huff.  We will also collect winter coats, gloves, hats and scarves for the women at the Shearith Israel Shelter. The shelter is currently full with 13 women. Help us outfit them for this cold weather.

CELEBRATING REV. MARY MILLER BRUEGGEMANN

Fellowship Hour on Sunday, December 26 will be hosted by the Deacons of Morningside to honor Mary’s year of ministry with MPC.  Please join us as we say thank you and good bye.

REFLECTIONS FOR ANY SEASON

Though not strictly an Advent devotional, you will enjoy “Always Room in the Inn”, the reflections of a woman who visited St. Joseph’s Home for Boys in Haiti in the days leading up to Christmas. Pick one up today from the Narthex or Welcome Center. Suggested donation is $10.

NEEDS DON'T END AT CHRISTMAS

From December 26 through January 9, MPC will collect food for the Intown Collaborative Ministries (ICM) food pantry.  Donations of food items such as canned meats, vegetables and various pop top items will help support the homeless and near homeless in 30306 and 30307 zip codes.  ICM continues to serve more and more guests each weekend so needs continue to grow, as well.  Please leave these items in the baskets in the Welcome Center.  On Saturday, January 8, MPC will, for the FIRST time, staff the ICM food pantry which operates out of Druid Hills Methodist Church at Ponce de Leon and Briarcliff Road.  This is a great way to hit the ground running with our Community Outreach in 2011! We'll need 5-6 volunteers from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Follow the link to ICM from MPC's website under "Mission In Our Community" to learn more, or volunteer by contacting Nancy Collins at ncollins0209@gmail.com or 770.842.3959.

COUNSELING SERVICE

During this interim period, Morningside members who are professional therapists are available to offer short-term counseling to individuals, couples, and families. Anyone desiring services can contact the church office, or call Sarah Brownlee at 404.876.3572.

A WORD OF GRATITUDE FROM CHRIS HENRY

"I thank my God every time I remember you..." These words from the Apostle Paul have been echoing in my head this week as I reflect on December 5’s  meaningful worship and joyful celebration of our time together. The musical "surprise" at the close of the service has been ringing in my ears since Timothy Miller greeted in me in the back of the sanctuary. It was truly a treasured moment.  I was (and am!) astounded by the Michelle Manuel painting, a gift that will be with me for a lifetime, giving constant witness to our deep connection to one another and to people of faith all over God's world. It is the perfect gift. I have been humbled by your cards, notes, and by the memories and words shared at the potluck luncheon. My appreciation for the opportunities Morningside has given me is limitless. I have been privileged to serve alongside you, from the day that Joanna Adams and Carolyn Morton came to interview me at Columbia Seminary to the final celebration. As I said in the sermon that day, I could never have guessed that I would have the chance to be mentored by Joanna, to serve with you all for five and a half years, to be inspired, challenged, called, and changed in such profound ways by this community. I am truly grateful.

As Morningside prepares for a new chapter of dynamic leadership and life-changing mission, as you welcome Baron Mullis as your new pastor in just over a month, I am filled with enthusiasm and hope for the future that God has prepared for you together. Your shared ministry will continue, in ever-deepening ways, to be a witness to the world of God's grace--what a journey you will have!

GIFTS OF SECURITIES

A number of Morningsiders choose to fulfill their annual pledge or make special gifts to Morningside through the gift of stock or other securities rather than cash.  We are always happy to accept such gifts; we ask only that you notify MPC Treasurer Randy Parrish when you initiate a transfer of securities so that we can make sure you receive proper credit for your gift.  Should you have questions or wish to make a gift of securities, please e-mail Randall.parrish@inginvestment.com or call 770.690.4745.  We thank you for your continuing support of the work and ministry of Morningside.

OVERNIGHT VOLUNTEERS AT WOMEN'S SHELTER

Check your calendars now to stay over one night at the Shearith Israel Shelter for Women here in our neighborhood.  Two volunteers are needed each evening from 6 p.m. to 6:45 a.m. to assist the Resident Manager with the 13 female guests. Morningside will provide volunteers January 8 through 16.  Sign up on mission bulletin board or contact Melinda Sandkam with any questions.

YOUNG ADULTS SERVE AT DRUID HILLS NIGHT SHELTER JANUARY 9

The MPC Young Adults will get together to provide a meal for the 30 men of the Druid Hills Night Shelter on Sunday, January 9. We'll meet at Druid Hills at 6:30 p.m. to serve and enjoy a meal with the guests until about 7:30 p.m. We're planning to do a taco meal and need volunteers to bring food and serve, so please contact Lisa Harris(Lisa.S.Harris@gmail.com) if you can help.

TAI CHI

Tai Chi instruction and practice at MPC resumes January 12, 2011.  Instruction by Bob Wells and Doris Williams will be at 2 p.m. weekly in the Fellowship Hall for ten weeks.  Building on the fall class, focus will be on 24 forms.  For further information or to sign up, contact Barbara Ray, 404.876.7892 or barbray@mindspring.com.
