O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray. Cast out our sin and enter in,
be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell. O
come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Amen.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 11 O Lord, How Shall I Meet You?

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, we confess that we are not prepared for the coming of your Son. We
are afraid to trust the light that shines in the darkness or to believe the good news
of the heavenly hosts. Forgive us for being distracted and dazzled by other lights
that do not give life. Forgive us for overlooking you among the poor and outcast.
Forgive our doubt and renew our hope, so that we may receive the fullness of
your grace. Come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE ANTHEM Sans Day Carol Cornish carol, arr. Rutter
Now the holly bears a berry as white as the milk, and Mary bore Jesus, who was wrapped up in silk: and
Mary bore Jesus Christ our Savior for to be, and the first tree in the greenwood, it was the holly. Now the
holly bears a berry as green as the grass, and Mary bore Jesus, who died on the cross. Now the holly bears a
berry as black as the coal, and Mary bore Jesus, who died for us all. Now the holly bears a berry, as blood is
it red, then trust we our Savior, who rose from the dead.

THE SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 1:18-25 (page 1 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMONThere’s Method in the Madness” Rev. Randy Calvo
...Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:20b

* THE HYMN 27 Gentle Mary Laid Her Child

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
