WORSHIP JANUARY 23, 2011
3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Bill Humphries
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness,
come into his presence with singing.
People: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us and we are his; we
are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him,
bless his name.
People: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his
faithfulness to all generations.
Leader: Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us.
- Psalm 100

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 376 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, though we are made in your image, we fail to live as you made us to
live. Where we have missed opportunities to serve, we need forgiveness. Where
we have been unkind, we need forgiveness. Where we have caused pain, we need
forgiveness. Where we harbor guilt and unease, we need forgiveness. For what we
know but cannot name, we need forgiveness. So remake us, we pray. Call us and
lead us where you would have us go. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing: it
is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast.
People: For we are what God has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good
works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Ephesians 2:8-10

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-yearolds in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in Room 003; Double Digits in Room 005.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 6:20-25 (page 158 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM Open Thou Mine Eyes John Rutter
Open thou mine eyes and I shall see; incline my heart and I shall desire; order my steps and I shall walk in
the ways of thy commandments. O Lord God, be thou to me a God, and beside thee let there be none else,
no other, nought else with thee. Vouchsafe to me to worship thee and serve thee, according to thy commandments, in truth of spirit, in reverence of body, in blessing of lips, in private and public.

THE SECOND LESSON 1 John 3:18-24 (page 226 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMONGod is Greater than Our Hearts” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 339 Be Thou My Vision

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to whom alone we must cleave,
whom alone we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom alone we
put our trust. Who is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent,
invisible; one in substance and yet distinct in three persons, the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Ghost. By whom we confess and believe all things in heaven
and earth, visible and invisible, to have been created, to be retained in their being,
and to be ruled and guided by his inscrutable providence for such end as his
eternal wisdom, goodness, and justice have appointed, and to the manifestation
of his own glory.
- The Scots’ Confession

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and
the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Thanks Be to God Thomas Matthews
Thanks be to God! Who in Christ always leads us in triumph, and through us spread the fragrance of the
knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God. As commissioned by God, in the sight
of God we speak in Christ. We preach not ourselves: but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants
for Jesus’ sake. For God who said “Let light shine out of darkness” has shone in our hearts to give light of the
knowledge of the Glory of God in the face of Christ. In him all the promises of God find their Yes! That is
why we utter the Amen through him to the glory of God!

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 430 Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Light Dawns on a Weary World William Rowan
Light dawns on a weary world when eyes begin to see all people's dignity. Light dawns on a weary world:
the promised day of justice comes. Hope blooms in a weary world when creatures, once forlorn, find wilderness
reborn. Hope blooms in a weary world: the promised green of Eden comes. The trees shall clap their
hands; the dry lands, gush with springs; the hills and mountains shall break forth with singing! We shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace, as all the world in wonder echoes, Shalom.
