WORSHIP APRIL 17, 2011
PALM SUNDAY

THE GATHERING Bill Humphries
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Solemn Melody Walford Davies
Sarah Martin, guest organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches
from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead
of him and that followed were shouting,
People: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the
name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
- Matthew 21:8-9

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 88 All Glory, Laud, and Honor

A WORD WITH CHILDREN

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we confess that we have followed you closely, saying the right
things, murmuring our assent in all the right places, shouting acclamations at all
the right times, but our discipleship is lacking. When the time comes for hard
declarations in the face of the demon possessed powers of this world, our hosannas
fade into “I know the man not.” Forgive us, we pray, for our failure to be disciples
willing to follow you into all the earth. We pray this in the name of Jesus,
and for his sake, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has passed away;
the new has come.
People: All this is from God, who reconciled himself to us through Christ
and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.
Leader: That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not
counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of
reconciliation to us. Believe the Promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
- 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 416)
Laud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son, laud and honor to
the Spirit, ever three and ever one; One in might and one in glory while unending
ages run.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-yearolds
in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in Room 003; Double Digits are in Room 005.

THE FIRST LESSON Philippians 2:5-11 (page 186 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM Lift Up Your Heads (from Messiah) G. F. Handel
Gene Martin, conductor
Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory
shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. - Psalm 24: 7-10

THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 26: 14-16; 36-46 (page 28 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONKeeping the Night Watch” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 85 What Wondrous Love Is This

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Brief Statement of Faith
We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of
God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by
word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the
brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent
and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus
was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of
the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking
the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.

THE OFFERTORY When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Gilbert Martin

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 84 In the Cross of Christ I Glory

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Ah, Holy Jesus Johann Cruger

* THE POSTLUDE O Lamb of God, Unspotted BWV 618 J.S. Bach
