WORSHIP APRIL 24, 2011
EASTER SUNDAY - 7:00 a.m. Service

PRELUDE Fantasy in B-flat Major (Andante) Telemann
Jeana Melilli, flutist

* CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they
came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had
prepared. They found the stone rolled away from
the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find
the body. While they were perplexed about this,
suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside
them. The women were terrified and bowed their
faces to the ground, but the men said to them,
“Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here, but has risen!”
People: Christ is risen indeed! - Luke 24:1-5

* HYMN Jesus Christ Is Risen Today (verses 1 and 4)
Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!
Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!
Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!
Praise eternal as God’s love; Alleluia!
Praise our God, ye heavenly host, Alleluia!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia!

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, in Jesus Christ you have reconciled the
world to yourself. The empty tomb proclaims your redemption
of all that you have made and loved. In Christ’s
resurrection lies the hope of our own. Hallelujah! And yet,
it is so easy to roll the stone back over the tomb and live as
though Easter has not happened. It is easy to retreat to fear.
It is easy to continue as though the resurrection were not
true. Forgive our fears, enliven our hearts, and call us to
proclaim the good news that Christ is risen, he is risen indeed!
Amen.

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, in Jesus Christ you have reconciled the world to yourself. The

In Christ’s resurrection lies the hope of our own. Hallelujah! And yet, it is so

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where
Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on
earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with
him in glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Colossians 3:1-4

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 118:24-29 (page 534 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM Easter Dawning at the Tomb Robert Wetzler
Stefanie Sudduth, soloist
Gene Martin, guest conductor
Early in the morning came Mary, bearing spices rare, but found the stone was rolled away, and an angel
said to her: Why seek ye the living among the dead? He whom ye seek is risen again, come see the place
where they laid Him. Then Jesus Himself appeared to Mary in the garden; and Mary went to tell the disciples:
I have seen the Lord.

THE SECOND LESSON John 20:1-18 (page 108 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONRedemption” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 115 Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ
his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Hallelujah, Amen G. F. Handel
Hallelujah, Amen. O Judah, rejoice, in songs divine, with Cherubim and Seraphim harmonious join.
Hallelujah, Amen.

* THE RESPONSE AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 119)
The three sad days are quickly sped, Christ rises glorious from the dead:

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Alleluia: Acclamation and Response Daniel Pinkham
Alleluia. Now is the hour of darkness past; Christ hath assumed his reigning power. Behold the great
accuser cast down from the skies, to rise no more. Alleluia.
“Twas by thy blood, immortal Lamb, thine armies trod the tempter down; ‘twas by thy word and
powerful name they gained the battle and renown. Alleluia.
Rejoice, ye heavens! Let every star shine with new glories round the sky! Saints, while ye sing the
heavenly war, raise your Redeemer’s name on high. Alleluia!
