WORSHIP MAY 8, 2011
3rd SUNDAY OF EASTER SUNDAY

THE GATHERING David Bothwell
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be
glad.
Leader: O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
People: I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all
my fears.
Leader: Look to him, and be radiant, so your faces shall never be ashamed.
People: We have come to worship God, our creator, redeemer and
sustainer. - Psalm 34:1-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 483 Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, at our best, we fall short of the discipleship you call forth from each
of us. At our worst, we belie the grace given us in Jesus Christ. Our sin remains
before us and we are powerless to save ourselves. The strength of our own efforts
cannot make us whole. Wholeness comes only from you, and we affirm once more
our need of your grace. Forgive our sin, we pray, and work wonderfully within us
so that faithful discipleship may indeed shine forth as a light to the nations, for
Jesus’ sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes
in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
People: Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn
the world, but so that the world might be saved through him.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - John 3:16-17

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 416)
Laud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son, laud and honor to the
Spirit, ever three and ever one; One in might and one in glory while unending
ages run.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-year olds in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in Room 003; Double Digits are in Room 005.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE RECOGNITION OF MORNINGSIDE GRADUATES

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 119:1-4; 12-19 (page 535 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM Jacob’s Vision Traditional English tune
As Jacob with travel was weary one day, at night on a stone for a pillow he lay; he saw in a vision a ladder
so high, that its foot was on earth and its top in the sky. Alleluia to Jesus, who died on the tree and hath
laid up a ladder of mercy for me. This ladder is long, it is strong and well-made, has stood hundreds of
years and is not yet decayed; many millions have climbed it and reached Sion's hill, and thousands by faith
are climbing it still. Come, let us ascend! All may climb it who will, for the angels of Jacob are guarding it
still; and remember, each step that by faith we pass o'er, some prophet or martyr hath trod it before. And
when we arrive at the haven of rest, we shall hear the glad words: "Come up hither, ye blest. Here are
regions of light, here are mansions of bliss." O, who would not climb such a ladder as this?

THE SECOND LESSON Acts 2:14a; 36-41 (page 111 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONFor All Who Are Far Away” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 223 O My Soul, Bless Your Redeemer (verses 1 through 4)

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Hymnus Franz Liszt

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 361 How Firm a Foundation (verses 1 through 5)

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE I Know That My Redeemer Lives George Lynn
I know that my redeemer lives! What comfort this sweet sentence gives! Alleluia! He lives, who once was
dead. He lives, my ever-living Head. Alleluia!
