SUMMER YOUTH OUTING

MPC kids who have completed 3rd-7th grades are off to Six Flags on Friday, June 3.  Contact Meredith Loftis today loftism@gmail.com if you would like to go and also if you are an adult willing to drive and chaperone.

TIME & TALENT FAIR

Wondering how to volunteer for MPC activities? After worship next Sunday, June 5, learn about the numerous outreach endeavors and church programs at Morningside. Chairs and leaders of many different committees will be available to discuss what our church is doing and how you can help. ALL members are encouraged to fill out a new Time & Talent form so we have a current record of your interests and abilities.

SPECIAL SUMMER CONCERT AT MPC

All are invited to The Atlanta Opera High School Institute Spring Concert at Morningside next Sunday, June 5, at 4 p.m. (free admission). This concert will culminate the 2010-2011 High School educational program, and will feature 11 select young singers from public and private schools throughout the area, performing highlights from the operatic repertoire. Walter Huff is music director of the program and will accompany the singers.

PENTECOST BANNERS ON JUNE 12

We recognize Pentecost as the beginning of Christ's church. Titled "Anointing Power," the pair of banners you will see at the front of the sanctuary on Pentecost makes use of batik fabrics in red, gold and yellow, to convey the power and energy of the Holy Spirit coming upon the apostles as tongues of fire, inspiring and enabling the start of the church - this Spirit that moved on that first Pentecost continues to move in our midst and in our souls, across all boundaries and throughout all time.

NEW MEMBER SUNDAY

Are you thinking about joining Morningside Church? Sunday, June 12 is a great time to do it! Plan to attend the Inquirers' Class that Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Session Room. Please be in touch with Baron Mullis (404.876.7396, x11 or baron.mullis@morningsidepc.org) to let him know of your interest.

ADVOCACY COMMITTEE

MPC's Advocacy Committee supports social-justice efforts year-round, including the Covenant Network, Interfaith Children's Movement, and Presbyterian Day at the Capitol. Come join a meeting of the Advocacy Committee on Sunday, June 12, at 12:30 in Room 201 to discuss what activities and issues we should support in the coming months. We'll discuss the new advocacy partnership at the Presbytery as well.

ANNUAL MEN'S RETREAT

You are invited to the fourth annual Men of Morningside Saturday Escape! On Saturday, June 25, we will meet at the church at 9 a.m. and travel together to Suches, GA. There, we will be hosted by John Watson and John Hawkins at the Watson’s cabin (located two hours from Atlanta on the Appalachian Trail). There will be time to enjoy the setting and do some hiking, biking, fishing, and porch-swinging. We will take a group hike led by Bud Braddock, a retired Ranger with the National Forest Service. There will be a time of devotion and conversation led by Baron Mullis. We will share lunch, an evening meal and return Saturday evening. For more information, contact John Watson. RSVP to the church office (office@morningsidepc.org; 404.876.7396) by Wednesday, June 15. Cost is $20.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

Adult Sunday School Classes—Lost (and Found) in Translation

Go to any bookstore for a Bible, and you’ll be overwhelmed by the variety of translations. KJV, NIV, TEB, NLT, RSV, NASB, NRSV, ETC.  Why are there so many different English translations?  What are the strengths and weaknesses of them?  Is there an “original Bible” we can rely on?  Explore the answers to these questions and more with the Morningside Bible Class and Jack and James Klotz in “Lost (and Found) in Translation”, Sundays in June at 9:45am in Room 201.

Children’s Classes

Today, preschool children will hear A Song in the Night. They’ll learn how Paul and Silas escape from prison in the middle of the night. In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, elementary classes and Double Digits will learn Paul’s teaching that new life in Christ makes people part of God’s household.
