Baron Mullis preaching

"Waiting and Praying"

Texts: John 17:1-11; Acts 1:6-14

 _______________________________________________________________________

FOUR MPC YOUTH OFF TO ARKANSAS

Join us as we commission the four MPC 6th graders Joseph Cochran, Lucy Grant, Cade Lawson and Taylor Morton and their two chaperones Leslie Grant and Melissa Lawson to travel to Perryville, Arkansas for the Heifer Global Challenge this coming Wednesday through Saturday.  Keep them in your prayers for safe travels and a great experience.

FIVE MPC GIRLS AT HORSE CAMP

Starting today, four MPC elementary-age girls are attending a week of Horse Camp at Calvin Center. Please keep them in your prayers. This Presbyterian camp and conference center offers a wide selection of day and overnight camps throughout the summer. Check out their website for more information.

TIME & TALENT FAIR

Wondering how to volunteer for MPC activities? After worship today, learn about the numerous outreach endeavors and church programs at Morningside. Chairs and leaders of many different committees will be available in Fellowship Hall to discuss what our church is doing and how you can help. ALL members are encouraged to fill out a new Time & Talent form, so we have a current record of your interests and abilities.

SPECIAL CONCERT TODAY AT MPC

All are invited to The Atlanta Opera High School Institute Spring Concert at Morningside today at 4 p.m. (free admission). This concert will culminate the 2010-2011 High School educational program, and will feature 11 select young singers from public and private schools throughout the area, performing highlights from the operatic repertoire. Walter Huff is music director of the program and will accompany the singers.

NEW MEMBER SUNDAY

Are you thinking about joining Morningside Church? Next Sunday, June 12 is a great time to do it! Plan to attend the Inquirers' Class that Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Session Room. Please be in touch with Baron Mullis (404.876.7396, x11 or baron.mullis @morningsidepc.org) to let him know of your interest.

ADVOCACY COMMITTEE

MPC's Advocacy Committee supports social-justice efforts year-round, including the Covenant Network, Interfaith Children's Movement, and Presbyterian Day at the Capitol. Come join a meeting of the Advocacy Committee next Sunday, June 12, at 12:30 in Room 201 to discuss what activities and issues we should support in the coming months. We'll discuss the new advocacy partnership at the Presbytery as well.

DRUID HILLS NIGHT SHELTER

One of our outreach organizations, Druid Hills Night Shelter, often stands proud as it sees its residents move out of the shelter to their own living quarters. They often cross their new hearth with very little to set up “Home Sweet Home”. So while this is something to be mindful of (and actionable) year-round, we are spotlighting June 2011 as collection month. Ponder your attic or basement or storage room and repurpose for a good purpose. Curt Barrett will be posting a list of most needed items on the mission bulletin board as well as Morningside’s Facebook page. He can be reached at 404.310.4665 or emailcurt@mindspring.com

ANNUAL MEN'S RETREAT

You are invited to the Men of Morningside’s annual Saturday Escape on June 25 hosted by John Watson and John Hawkins at the Watson’s cabin. Plan to meet at the church at 9 a.m. and travel together to Suches (two hours from Atlanta). We will have time to hike, bike, fish, porch-swing and enjoy a devotion and conversation led by Baron Mullis. Lunch and an evening meal is included (cost: $20). RSVP to office@morningsidepc.org by Wednesday, June 15.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

See the display in the Welcome Center for items that are needed for VBS – supplies, snacks and more. Sign up today to bring in a few items to support this outreach for the children in our community. Volunteers are needed for a workday on Wednesday, June 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and final set up Sunday, June 19, 2 to 5 p.m. Contact Melinda Sandkam at msandkam@ morningsidepc.org.

MISSION CAMP

It’s Not All About Me returns with outings to learn about those in need and how we can help. Register your (completed) 2nd-6th grader now. Deadline is today. Contact Melinda Sandkam at msandkam @morningsidepc.org for more information.

MPC COUPLES MEET JUNE 10 AT DBA BBQ

On Friday, June 10 at 7 p.m., the Couples Group will meet at DBA BBQ restaurant in Virginia Highlands. All couples, members, and guests are invited. The group meets year-round the second Friday of the month, at people's homes or neighborhood restaurants. RSVP to the Bremers at kdbremer@bellsouth.net.

DATES SET TO RETURN TO HAITI

MPC will take a second pilgrimage to Haiti October 1-7.  Attend an informational meeting Sunday, June 19, at 12:15 in Room 201 for all the details. Contact Brad Odom with questions jbradleyodom@gmail.com.

FACILITIES COMMITTEE

The Facilities Committee is working on a Medical Emergency Policy. If you are CPR certified and willing to respond to a medical emergency while at church, email John Watson at atwatson@mindspring.com. If you need further AED training, please indicate that. Your response by June 6 will help us make decisions about MPC’s medical emergency training needs.

CONGRATULATIONS TO:

Betsy and Jason Holland on the birth of their son, Alexander Stuart Holland, on Wednesday,  May 25. Grandparents are Cindy and Bill Humphries.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

Adult Sunday School Classes—Lost (and Found) in Translation

Go to any bookstore for a Bible, and you’ll be overwhelmed by the variety of translations. KJV, NIV, TEB, NLT, RSV, NASB, NRSV, ETC.  Why are there so many different English translations?  What are the strengths and weaknesses of them?  Is there an “original Bible” we can rely on?  Explore the answers to these questions and more with the Morningside Bible Class and Jack and James Klotz in “Lost (and Found) in Translation,” Sundays in June at 9:45a.m. in Room 201.

Children’s Classes

Today the preschool children will hear the story A Ride in the Night, the Story of Paul’s Escape on Horseback. K-2nd grade children will begin Awesome Adventures with God’s people on Mountains and Seas with the story of Noah’s faith in the midst of the flood. 3rd-7th graders are in worship.
