WORSHIP JUNE 5, 2011
7th SUNDAY OF EASTER SUNDAY
THE GATHERING Bill Humphries
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord.
People: Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time on and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is
to be praised.
Leader: The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like
the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and
the earth?
People: He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash
heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his
people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous
mother of children. Praise the Lord!
Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 113
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 489 Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we know your promises to us. We know that you have promised to
be with us. We know that, no matter what arises, we may trust in you. We know
that, were we to take the wings of the morning and dwell in the furthest parts of
the sea, even there you would be with us. We know your promises and yet it is so
easy to forget that you are with us. It is easy to look for comfort elsewhere. It is
easy to despair and wonder where you are and why you haven’t fixed our problem.
And yet, Jesus is God with us. Forgive us when we forget this and enable us to live
our lives remembering that you are with us always. We make this and all of our
prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view, even though
we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that
way.
People: So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has
passed away; see, everything has become new!
Leader: All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the
ministry of reconciliation. Believe the promise of the Gospel!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! 2 Corinthians 5:16-18
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
