PENTECOST BANNERS—JUNE 2011
We recognize Pentecost as the beginning of Christ's church. Titled "Anointing Power,” the pair of banners at the front of the sanctuary make use of batik fabrics in red, gold and yellow. The movement in the fabrics conveys the power and energy of the Holy Spirit coming upon the apostles as tongues of fire inspiring and enabling the start of the church. This Living Spirit that moved on that first Pentecost continues to move in our midst and in our souls across all boundaries and throughout all time.
ADVOCACY COMMITTEE
MPC's Advocacy Committee supports social-justice efforts year-round, including the Covenant Network, Interfaith Children's Movement, and Presbyterian Day at the Capitol. Come join a meeting of the Advocacy Committee today at 12:30 in Room 201 to discuss what activities and issues we should support in the coming months. We'll discuss the new advocacy partnership at the Presbytery as well.
PICK A PAN SUNDAY
Take home an empty pan from the narthex today and return it by 10 a.m. this Tuesday, June 14 filled with the requested item to help feed 45 men attending the Common Ground program at AIDS Alliance for Faith and Health.
SAVE THE DATES - OCTOBER 14-16
Join members of the Retreat Committee downstairs for Fellowship Hour today after the service to have a bite to eat and to find out about this year's MPC Retreat in Montreat, NC, October 14-16. Pictures of past retreats, information about what you can look forward to for the weekend, and registration forms will be available. Like Fellowship Hour, only more so, the retreat is a wonderful place to get to know others in our growing community.
DRUID HILLS NIGHT SHELTER
Druid Hills Night Shelter stands proud as it sees its residents move out of the shelter to their own living quarters; however, they often cross their new hearth with very little to set up “Home Sweet Home.” During the month of June, ponder your attic, basement or storage room and repurpose for a good purpose. Curt Barrett will post a list of the most needed items on the mission bulletin board, as well as, MPC’s Facebook page. For more information, contact Curt at 404.310.4665 or emailcurt@mindspring.com.
ANNUAL MEN'S RETREAT
You are invited to the Men of Morningside’s annual Saturday Escape on June 25 hosted by John Watson and John Hawkins at the Watson’s cabin. Plan to meet at the church at 9 a.m. and travel together to Suches (two hours from Atlanta). We will have time to hike, bike, fish, porch-swing and enjoy a devotion and conversation led by Baron Mullis. Lunch and an evening meal is included (cost: $20). RSVP to office@morningsidepc.org by Wednesday, June 15.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
See the display in the Welcome Center for remaining items needed for VBS – supplies, snacks and more. Sign up today to bring in a few items by next Sunday to support this outreach for the children in our community. Volunteers are needed for a workday this Wednesday, June 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and final set up next Sunday, June 19, 2 to 5 p.m. Contact Melinda Sandkam at msandkam@ morningsidepc.org.
DATES SET TO RETURN TO HAITI
MPC will take a second pilgrimage to Haiti October 1-7. Attend an informational meeting Sunday, June 19, at 12:15 in Room 201 for all the details. Deposits will be due in early July, so be sure to let us know if you are interested, but cannot attend the informational meeting. Contact Brad Odom with questions jbradleyodom@gmail.com.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
Adult Sunday School Classes—Lost (and Found) in Translation
Go to any bookstore for a Bible, and you’ll be overwhelmed by the variety of translations. KJV, NIV, TEB, NLT, RSV, NASB, NRSV, ETC. Why are there so many different English translations? What are the strengths and weaknesses of them? Is there an “original Bible” we can rely on? Explore the answers to these questions and more with the Morningside Bible Class and Jack and James Klotz in “Lost (and Found) in Translation,” Sundays in June at 9:45a.m. in Room 201.
Children’s Classes
The Preschool Class will hear The Shipwreck, the Story of Paul’s Rescue at Sea. K-2 children will continue adventuring with God’s people in the lesson “Laws From the Top of Mount Sinai.” 3rd-7th graders will explore different aspects of worship with the Worship for Life curriculum.
