WORSHIP JUNE 19, 2011
TRINITY SUNDAY
THE GATHERING Tim Gargis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 8
Leader: O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set
your glory above the heavens.
People: Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark
because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
Leader: When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars
that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
People: Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them
with glory and honor. You have given them dominion over the
works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet,
Leader: all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the
fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
People: O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 285 God, You Spin the Whirling Planets
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, you created the world and all that is in it and called it good.
Then you entrusted your good creation, including our very selves, to our care.
Forgive us for when we have failed to care for what you have made. Forgive us
for when we have failed to care for ourselves. Forgive us for when we have
looked at the wonder of what you have made and despised it. Turn our hearts, O
Lord, that we may see all that you have made, ourselves and each other, and all
your works of creation, the way you see us. Enable us to see that, “it was very
good.” We pray all these things in the name of Jesus and for his sake, Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth,
and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we
raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 1:1-10 (page 1 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM The Heavens Are Telling (from The Creation) Joseph Haydn
The heavens are telling the glory of God. The wonder of his work displays the firmament. The
day that is coming speaks to the day, the night that is gone to following night. In all the lands resounds
the word, never unperceived, ever understood.
THE SECOND LESSON Genesis 1:21-2:4 (page 1 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “It Was Very Good” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 268 God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens (verses 1 and 3)
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY A Trumpeting Dale Wood
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 554 Let All Things Now Living
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Golden Breaks the Dawn Chinese folk tune
Golden breaks the dawn, comes the eastern sun over lake and lawn, new day has begun. Birds above
me fly, flowers bloom below; through the earth and sky, God’s great mercies flow.
