WELCOME GUEST PREACHER
Katherine Higgins is a Chaplain and Clinical Pastoral Educator at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. In her role at Children's, Katherine teaches clergy and seminarians about pastoral care with those in crisis situations. She is a lifelong Presbyterian, originally from Charlotte, NC. Katherine attended Oberlin College and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Ordained by the Presbytery of Charlotte, Katherine is now a minister member of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, serving in a validated ministry. When not working, Katherine enjoys travel, reading, Braves baseball, sewing and knitting.
CALL TO WORSHIP
This morning, our Call to Worship is being read by one of our Double Digits (4th-6th graders). The Double Digits wrote this Call to Worship during children’s worship recently. This age group is enjoying the Worship for Life curriculum this summer which takes them through each part of worship week by week. They are alternating this course with attending worship so that they can learn through experience.
PASTOR ON CALL
During Baron's study leave and vacation, The Rev. Dr. Glenn Small, Jr., an affiliate member at Morningside, will serve as pastor on call. Glenn is an ordained Presbyterian minister and a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice. He can be reached at 770.414.5957 or 404.862.7340. During office hours, you may also contact the church office at 404.876.7396.
STAGE/CLOSETS WORKDAY
Join us for any amount of time 9 a.m.-5 p.m. this Tuesday, July 12 to help sort, straighten and inventory items on stage and in Sunday school room closets. Even an hour of your time is valuable in this mid-year workday. Sign up on bulletin board outside Session Room 103 or contact Melinda Sandkam with questions.
UPDATE ON COMMON GROUND
AIDS Alliance for Faith & Health (AAFH) contacted MPC to let us know that the Common Ground program has been suspended at this time. They will keep in touch and let us know if or when the program resumes. Thank you to the many, many volunteers who always Pick-A-Pan for our turn on second Tuesdays. If making a dish once a month is a great fit for you in supporting the outreach programs of MPC, please consider signing up to provide a dish on a second Sunday evening for the men at Druid Hill Night Shelter or the fourth Saturday evening on odd months (that includes July 23) to feed residents at Clifton Sanctuary Ministries in the interim.
BACK-2-SCHOOL
Help more than 200 local school kids by helping out at the Back-2-School backpack-filling party, hosted by the Georgia Justice Project for the children of its clients. MPC will send five volunteers to help set up and work the event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, July 16 near Turner Field. This is a great way to help at-risk youth get a good start for the new school year. To sign up, contact Bill Means, billmeans @bellsouth.net, 404.234.9718.
LGBT & FRIENDS
The LGBT Group’s next gathering will be this Saturday, July 16, at the home of Ann Bowers and Maria Ragland (568 Park Dr. NE, 30306). The LGBT Group meets regularly for fun, food, fellowship and building connections within our faith community. Our events are open to all MPC members and friends who support full inclusion of LGBT individuals within the church. RSVP for this event or add your name to the mailing list by contacting Peter C. Dickson (404.839.1281 or peter.dickson@comcast.net).
WELCOME HOME BASKETS
We are once again collecting items to create Welcome Home baskets for the men moving on from Clifton Sanctuary Ministries. See the display in the Welcome Center for requested items and bring them in by July 17. Contact Shepherd Tony Fishpaw 404.597.5485 tonyfishpaw@ me.com.
THEATER OUTING
Contact Melinda Sandkam today to reserve your group ticket to see ‘The Tempest’ at Georgia Shakespeare next Sunday, July 17 at 7 p.m. We will picnic together beforehand.
MISSION CAMP NEEDS YOU
We have 22 kids registered for our third Mission Camp July 25-29. Now, we are working to secure enough chaperones/drivers. This is a very important aspect of Mission Camp, as most of our week is spent visiting outreach programs. Contact Melinda Sandkam today to sign up for a morning, afternoon or whole day, or see needs on the bulletin board outside of Session Room 103.
SAVE THE DATE FOR MONTREAT
Save the dates October 14-16! Our church retreat has moved to a prime fall foliage date. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for this year’s retreat in the mountains. Registration forms are available at the church and online.
