WORSHIP JULY 10, 2011
15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING David Bothwell
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: O Lord, Mighty Creator and Redeemer, who forgives us and helps us
with troubles,
People: Let us praise you with love and forgiveness.
Leader: As we gather in worship to pray, sing and give thanks,
People: Let us be nice and show kindness to our neighbors, help those
in the world who have less, and share God’s love.
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 461 God Is Here! (verses 1 through 3)
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought,
word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We
have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as
ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your son
Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away;
see, everything has become new!
People: All this is from God, who reconciled us through Christ and has given
us the ministry of reconciliation.
Leader: That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their
trespasses against them and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.
Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 455)
All creatures, your Creator bless, and worship God in humbleness. O sing ye!
Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in
One! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 55:6-13 (page 644 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand Earlene Rentz
On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye to Canaan’s fair and happy land, where my
possessions lie. O’er all those wide extended plains shines one eternal day when love forevermore shall
reign, and turn the night to day. There David stands with harp in hand as master of the choir; ten thousand
times was David blessed, the music rang with power. No fear or sorrows or distress shall reach that
blissful shore; all sickness, suffering, pain, and death are felt and feared no more. I’m bound for the
promised land; oh, who will come and go with me? I’m bound for the promised land.
THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 (page 13 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “The Extravagant Gardener” Katherine Higgins
* THE HYMN 329 Break Thou the Bread of Life
THE OFFERTORY With Timbrel and Dance Margaret Tucker
Handbell Choir (James Klotz, director)
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

The Great Thanksgiving
Leader: The Lord be with you.

Leader: It is truly right…
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with the choirs of heaven
and with all the faithful of every time and place who forever sing to the
glory of your name:
Sanctus: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, (Hymn 581)
Heaven and earth are full of your glory; Hosanna in the highest. Blessed
is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Great is the mystery of faith.

Christ is risen,
Christ will come again.
