FLOWERS THIS SUNDAY

The flowers are given by the Paul Family to the glory of God and in loving memory of their son Scott Paul.

GUEST PREACHER

This Sunday morning we welcome Morningside member, The Rev. Dr. Glenn Small, Jr., to our pulpit as guest preacher. A native of Virginia, Glenn was ordained in Atlanta Presbytery in 1967. He has been an affiliate member of Morningside for seven years. Glenn is an avid reader, small group and retreat leader, and avid stamp and porcelain collector.

PASTOR ON CALL

During Baron's study leave and vacation, Glenn Small is serving as pastor on call. Glenn is an ordained Presbyterian minister and a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice. He can be reached at 770.414.5957 or 404.862.7340. During office hours, you may also contact the church office at 404.876.7396.

WELCOME HOME BASKETS

We are collecting items to create “Welcome Home” baskets for the men moving on from Clifton Sanctuary Ministries. See the display in the Welcome Center for requested items and bring them in this week. Contact Shepherd Tony Fishpaw 404.597.5485 tonyfishpaw@ me.com.

THEATER OUTING

This evening, a group from Morningside is attending Georgia Shakespeare’s production of “The Tempest.” We plan to also attend their next show – a British farce called “Noises Off” on Sunday, August 7 at 7 p.m. Contact Melinda by July 31 for a group ticket ($26.75) to enjoy an evening of hilarity. Picnic tables will be available before the show for dining together.

MISSION CAMP NEEDS YOU

We have 24 kids registered for our third Mission Camp July 25-29.  Now, we are working to secure enough chaperones and drivers. This is a very important aspect of Mission Camp, as most of our week is spent visiting outreach programs. There are still needs on Monday (2), Thursday (2), and Friday (3). We MUST have more help in order to transport kids each day. Monday and Thursday could be half days , and Friday is not all day. Contact Melinda Sandkam today to sign up for a morning, afternoon or whole day, or see the needs on the bulletin board outside of Session Room 103.

CLIFTON SANCTUARY MINISTRIES

On Saturday, July 23 MPC will serve dinner for the 30 homeless men at Clifton Sanctuary Ministries beginning at 5:30 p.m. If you would like to help serve or can prepare one of the dinner items, please sign up on the bulletin board located outside the session room. You may also contact Tony Fishpaw at 404.597.5485 or tonyfishpaw@me.com.

GOT GAME?

“Ping Pong, Pop Tarts and Prayer” continues through the summer for completed third through seventh graders at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays in Rooms 003 and 005. The Double Digits and Youth of MPC are invited to meet Ms. Meredith on Sunday mornings to enjoy a cookies ‘n cream or frosted blueberry Pop Tart between games of ping pong, foosball and air hockey. This fun time of fellowship is wrapped up with prayer before the worship hour.

“THIS I BELIEVE…”

These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and at least a few of us remember a service at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. We will repeat This I Believe as our 11 a.m. worship on Sunday, August 7.  This year’s homilies will be delivered by Jennye Guy, Bill Means and Ruthlyn Newell.  Don’t miss this chance to hear what Jennye, Bill and Ruthlyn believe!

SAVE THE DATE FOR MONTREAT

Save the dates October 14-16! Our church retreat has moved to a prime fall foliage date. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for this year’s retreat in the mountains. Registration forms are available at the church and online.

NEW REFUGEE FAMILY ARRIVING

Six Star Refugee Partnership Inc. is welcoming a new family from Burma on July 27! They're a family of five: the parents, a 19-year-old uncle, and two sons, ages 2 and 18 months. Immediate needs are volunteers to help move furniture and prepare the apartment for their arrival Saturday, July 23. We are also in need of a washer  and dryer. Contact Betsy Armstrong; bjarmstrong@bellsouth.net or 770.396.6496 or Holly Campbell; holly campbell1@gmail.com or 404.435.0676.

CONGRATULATIONS TO

Morningside members Andrea Leonard and John Morgan on their July 3 marriage.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

Adult Sunday School Classes

Each Sunday through September 4th, the class will be studying select chapters from Dr. Peter Gomes book, The Good Book; Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart.  For July, remaining topics include The Bible & Mystery (7/24) and The Bible & Anti-Semitism (7/31).  Dr. Gomes’ book takes a look at how we should read scripture and what scripture actually says on a variety of continually controversial subjects.  Join in and see why some call this book “the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people.”  This class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 201.

Children’s Classes

Preschool children will learn about God’s promise to Noah in the story A Rainy, Rainy Day. The K-2 class will learn about a gathering at God’s Holy Mountain when God invites outsiders to the house of prayer for all God’s people. 3rd-7th graders will explore different aspects of “Confessions and Assurance” with the Worship for Life curriculum.
