SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Daniel Ryder Woolley, son of Charles and Tish Woolley, will be baptized this morning.

FLOWERS THIS SUNDAY

The flowers today are given to the glory of God and in honor of the baptism of Daniel Ryder Woolley by his grandmother Charlsie Woolley.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

A flower calendar is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway outside the Session Room, and if you wish to give flowers in honor or in memory of a loved one, we invite you to write your name and phone number next to the desired date. It is possible to share a date with other members if you want to give one arrangement or you may sign up alone to give both arrangements. Contact Georgia Marshall, Head of Flower Guild, for more details (gkmarshall@gmail.com or 404.909.3477-cell). Contact Anna Best in the office by Tuesday of that week for bulletin recognition.

“THIS I BELIEVE…”

These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and many of us remember a service at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. We will repeat This I Believe as our 11 a.m. worship on Sunday, August 7.  This year’s homilies will be delivered by Jennye Guy, Bill Means and Ruthlyn Newell.  Don’t miss this chance to hear what Jennye, Bill and Ruthlyn believe!

THEATER OUTING

A group from Morningside will attend Georgia Shakespeare’s production of “Noises Off” next Sunday, August 7 at 7 p.m. Michael Frayn's hilarious farce takes you behind the curtain with a mediocre touring company trying to put on a terrible play and making a delightfully entertaining mess of it. Contact Melinda immediately after worship today for a group ticket ($26.75) to enjoy an evening of hilarity.

NEW MEMBER SUNDAY

Are you thinking about joining Morningside Church? Sunday, August 14 is a great time to do it? Plan to attend the Inquirers’ Class that Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Session Room. Please be in touch with Baron Mullis (404.876.7396, x11 or baron.mullis@ morningsidepc.org) to let him know of your interest.

COUPLES GROUP

All MPC couples will be welcomed by host couple Carol and Bill Southwood for a fun evening at Caramba Restaurant on Decatur St., Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m.  RSVP to Kathy and Alan Bremer (kdbremer@bellsouth.net or 404.872.3001).

SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK OFF

In just 8 days, many of the children of MPC start back to school!  Here at Morningside, we begin our Sunday school year on Sunday, August 14 at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to this hour of fun with light breakfast items. Jonah’s Whale will headline the game corner! Crafts and dress up areas that will take you back to VBS and look ahead to Big Fun days. Our Bread for the Journey outreach will be available to showcase how children at MPC participate in mission. And the kids will get a chance to try their hands at chimes. Once we dedicate the new school year, our children are then invited to start the school year in their “new” age groups.

THORNWELL HOME OFFERING

As part of our August 14 Sunday School Kickoff, MPC will again collect a special offering for Thornwell Home for Children. Founded as a Presbyterian ministry in 1875, Thornwell is a joyful Christian community, offering hope and wholeness to children and families. Its goals are to provide loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected children, to offer an opportunity for healing by providing proper healthcare and mental health counseling for every Thornwell child, and to offer the children hope for a successful future by providing educational support and teaching self-advocacy. The offering envelopes for Thornwell were made by MPC children at July's Mission Camp.

MISSION CAMP FINALE

Our Mission Camp attendees will assist in serving at the ice cream social today for Fellowship Hour. They have played with preschoolers this week in West Atlanta, led Bingo for seniors on Lenox Rd., learned how to care for the environment at Len Foote Hike Inn and Trees Atlanta, raised money for the Atlanta Humane Society and worked to fill shelves for those facing hunger. They would like to finish off the week by serving those here at MPC and saying a big thank you for a great week of learning ‘It’s NOT All About Me.’

CONGRATULATIONS TO

Jill and Doug Neff on the birth of their son Theodore “Theo” Michael Neff, on July 20. Jill has taught Pre-K at MPP for nine years.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

Adult Sunday School Classes

Each Sunday through September 4th, the class is studying select chapters from Dr. Peter Gomes’ book, The Good Book; Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart.  Dr. Gomes’ book takes a look at how we should read scripture and what scripture actually says on a variety of continually controversial subjects. Next Sunday, August 7 we will look at Chapter 14, “The Bible & Wealth” with Bill Humphries, Tom Daniel, and Bobbie McCrackin leading the discussion.  Join in and see why some call this book “the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people.”  This class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 201.

Children’s Classes

This Sunday preschool children will hear the story David and the Giant and wonder what it means to be brave. The K-2 class will adventure by the sea as they participate in the lesson “Follow Me” to learn how Jesus called his disciples. 3rd-7th graders will explore the sacrament of baptism with the Worship for Life curriculum.
