WORSHIP JULY 31, 2011
18th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Joe Ballay
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
People: Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
Leader: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
People: For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised!
Leader: Let us worship God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Amen.
- Psalm 96:1-4

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 416 Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of love, you made us for love. You reached to us from across our sin to make
known to us the depth of your love for us. And yet, despite these profuse declarations,
we live as though you did not love us. We live as though we were not created
for love. We sin, and our hearts are not right within us. Forgive us, we pray;
turn our hearts and change us into the loving disciples you call us to be. We pray
this in the name of love incarnate, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God.
People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,
for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in
glory. Friends, believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and
friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this
our hymn of grateful praise.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Dearest Jesus, We Are Here Ahle/Bach

THE FIRST LESSON 2 Corinthians 6:1-13 (page 171 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM All Good Gifts William Sisson
We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand. He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain. All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. Thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all His love. God only is the maker of all things near and far. He paints the wayside flower, He lights the evening star. The wind and waves obey Him, by Him the birds are fed. Much more to us, His children, He gives our daily bread. We thank you, our creator, for all things bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Accept the gifts we offer for all your love imparts, and what you most would treasure, our humble thankful hearts.

THE SECOND LESSON Mark 4:35-41 (page 36 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONOpen Wide Your Hearts” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 339 Be Thou My Vision

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
