Homilies by Ruthlyn Newell, Bill Means, Jennye Guy
Texts: Psalm 85:8-13; 1 Corinthians 11:23-36

THE CHOIR WILL LOOK COOLER IN AUGUST…LITERALLY
Due to the heat and elevated temperatures in the Chancel, our choir is going “sans robes” for August. They’ll re-robe in September and as always, we thank our choir for their wonderful leadership in worship!
“THIS I BELIEVE…”
These words prompt various responses from all of us. Some think of Starbucks cups, others of Edward R. Murrow, and many of us remember a service at MPC where our fellow congregants told us what they held as core values. We repeat This I Believe today at our 11 a.m. worship. This year’s homilies will be delivered by Jennye Guy, Bill Means and Ruthlyn Newell.
NEW MEMBER SUNDAY
Are you thinking about joining Morningside Church? Sunday, August 14 is a great time to do it? Plan to attend the Inquirers’ Class that Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Session Room. Please be in touch with Baron Mullis (404.876.7396, x11 or baron.mullis@ morningsidepc.org) to let him know of your interest.
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
The Session has called a congregational meeting following worship on Sunday, August 14. The purpose of this meeting is to allow Morningside to vote on extending the honor of "Pastor Emerita" to the Rev. Joanna Adams for her service to Morningside. Following the affirmative vote, we will celebrate this milestone with Joanna and Al on September 18 following worship.
COUPLES GROUP
All MPC couples will be welcomed by host couple Carol and Bill Southwood for a fun evening at Caramba Restaurant on Decatur St., Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m. RSVP to Kathy and Alan Bremer (kdbremer@bellsouth.net or 404.872.3001).
EVERYONE NEEDS SOME ART!
Clifton Sanctuary Ministries is fortunate that Morningside member Doug Self has donated hundreds of pieces of art from his interior design showroom, and they will be available for sale on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Clifton's home (369 Connecticut Avenue, Atlanta, 30307). There are framed prints, as well as canvas-framed art and a wide variety—including prints perfect for a beach house or a formal dining room. Several very large pieces are also included. Contact Leslie Prince 770.377.0027 with questions.
SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK OFF
Tomorrow, many of the children of MPC start back to school! Here at Morningside, we begin our Sunday school year next Sunday, August 14 at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to this hour of fun, with light breakfast items. Jonah’s Whale will headline the game corner! Crafts and dress up areas that will take you back to VBS and look ahead to Big Fun days. Our Bread for the Journey outreach will be available to showcase how children at MPC participate in mission. And the kids will get a chance to try their hands at chimes. Once we dedicate the new school year, our children are then invited to start the school year in their “new” age groups.
THORNWELL HOME OFFERING
As part of our August 14 Sunday School Kickoff, MPC will again collect a special offering for Thornwell Home for Children. Founded as a Presbyterian ministry in 1875, Thornwell is a joyful Christian community, offering hope and wholeness to children and families. Its goals are to provide loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected children, to offer an opportunity for healing by providing proper healthcare and mental health counseling for every Thornwell child, and to offer the children hope for a successful future by providing educational support and teaching self-advocacy. The offering envelopes for Thornwell were made by MPC children at July's Mission Camp.
10TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11
As our nation approaches the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, Walter Huff and the Chancel Choir are preparing special musical selections to be presented in worship on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Mark your calendars to be with us.
WE NEED YOUR BIG BOXES
As we look ahead to a new introduction to the Christmas pageant, we need your big boxes. Please bring any large (think big enough for a kid to fit in) boxes to the stage in Fellowship Hall. Please check for any staples or other sharp edges.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
Adult Sunday School Classes
Each Sunday through September 4th, the class is studying select chapters from Dr. Peter Gomes’ book, The Good Book; Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart. Dr. Gomes’ book takes a look at how we should read scripture and what scripture actually says on a variety of continually controversial subjects. Next Sunday, August 14 we will look at Chapter 7, “The Bible & Women” with Katie Davis & Jack Klotz leading the discussion. Join in and see why some call this book “the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people.” This class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 201.
Children’s Classes
The Preschool Class will hear about Jonah’s underwater adventure as they hear A Big Fish Story. K-2 children will learn what Jesus taught his followers in the lesson “The Sermon on the Mountain Side.” 3rd-7th grade will attend worship.
