THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
Join us here at Morningside Presbyterian as we dedicate the new school year, celebrating and honoring not only the teachers, volunteers and students here, but throughout our communities.
From preschool to graduate school, special education teachers to professors, and everyone in between, we are thankful. We also pray for students around the world; those at the Thornwell Home in South Carolina and the boys at St. Joseph’s in Haiti.
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
The Session has called a congregational meeting following worship today. The purpose of this meeting is to allow Morningside to vote on extending the honor of "Pastor Emerita" to the Rev. Joanna Adams for her service to Morningside. Following the affirmative vote, we will celebrate this milestone with Joanna and Al on September 18 following worship.
THORNWELL HOME OFFERING
As part of our Sunday School Kickoff, MPC is again collecting a special offering for Thornwell Home for Children. Founded as a Presbyterian ministry in 1875, Thornwell is a joyful Christian community, offering hope and wholeness to children and families. Its goals are to provide loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected children, to offer an opportunity for healing by providing healthcare and mental health counseling for the children, and offering them hope for a future by providing educational support and teaching self-advocacy. The offering envelopes for Thornwell were decorated by MPC children at July's Mission Camp.
KICK OFF TO PROGRAM YEAR
Today, the children of Morningside Presbyterian kicked off their school year before worship in Fellowship Hall. Starting with children’s worship today, they have each moved up to their next age level. Debbi Loomis continues as our kindergarten-1st grade leader in Room 001. Shavon Starling-Louis will return September 4 as 2nd-3rd grade leader in Room 003. And, Meredith Loftis leads the Double Digits in Room 005 and when they attend worship. Volunteer training is taking place in Room 001 at 10 a.m. the next two Sundays, August 21 and 28. Contact shepherds Lele Ruby (K-1st) leleruby@bellsouth.net and Caroline Tanner (2nd-3rd) caroline.tanner @hklaw.com to RSVP for one of them today.
THE CHOIR WILL LOOK COOLER IN AUGUST…LITERALLY
Due to the heat and elevated temperatures in the Chancel, our choir is going “sans robes” for August. They’ll re-robe in September and as always, we thank our choir for their wonderful leadership in worship!
MIDDLE SCHOOL KICK-OFF
There are officially 10 Middle School Youth at Morningside Presbyterian Church! They will begin their program year with Youth Group this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. They will be going on a shopping adventure to decorate their new Middle School Loft in the steeple space. Your support is needed to make all their programming a success. Contact Shannon Lazzaro lazzaroshannon@yahoo.com, if you could provide dinner for youth group one Sunday this fall. Contact Youth Committee Chair Carolyn Morton carolynmorton@bellsouth.net if you can help in other areas.
CPR/FIRST AID TRAINING
This training will be offered on Saturday, August 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. All are welcome. Cost is $20. RSVP to Sarah Tomaka at mpp@morningsidepc.org.
YOUNG ADULTS TO LUNCH
Everyone is welcome to join the Young Adults for lunch at George’s on Sunday, August 28 at 12:30 p.m.
10th ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11
As our nation approaches the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, Walter Huff and the Chancel Choir are preparing special musical selections to be presented in worship on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Mark your calendars to be with us.
WE NEED YOUR BIG BOXES
As we look ahead to a new introduction to the Christmas pageant, we need your big boxes. Please bring any large (think big enough for a kid to fit in) boxes to the stage in Fellowship Hall. Please check for any staples or other sharp edges.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
Adult Sunday School Classes
Each Sunday through September 4, the class is studying select chapters from Dr. Peter Gomes’ book, The Good Book; Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart. Dr. Gomes’ book takes a look at how we should read scripture and what scripture actually says on a variety of continually controversial subjects. Next Sunday, August 21 we will look at Chapter 10, “The Bible & Suffering” with Daisy Ottmann leading the discussion. Join in and see why some call this book “the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people.” This class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 201.
Children’s Classes
Today, preschool children will learn about Moses and the burning bush in the story I’ll Do It! Both the K-1st and 2nd-3rd grade classes will adventure with Jesus on the Sea of Galilee as they learn how Jesus brought calm to the stormy sea. 4th-5th graders will learn about the sacrament of communion from the Worship for Life curriculum.
