Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights!

People: Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!
Leader: Let them praise the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created.
People: He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which
cannot be passed.
Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. - Psalm 148:1-6
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 488 The God of Abraham Praise
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, though we are made in your image, we fail to live as you made us
to live. Where we have missed opportunities to serve, we need forgiveness.
Where we have been unkind, we need forgiveness. Where we have caused pain,
we need forgiveness. Where we harbor guilt and unease, we need forgiveness.
For what we know but cannot name, we need forgiveness. So remake us, we pray.
Call us and lead us where you would have us go. Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
People: But we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are,
yet without sin.
Leader: Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive
mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. - Hebrews 4:15-16
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 341)
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS
THE SERVICE OF COMMISSIONING
THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 (page 645 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM I Know Not What the Future Hath Zaninelli (adapted from an American folk hymn)
I know not what the future hath of marvel or surprise, but this I know, that life and death God’s mercy
underlies. No offering of my own I have, nor works my faith to prove. I can but give the gifts He gave,
and plead His love for love. I know not where His islands lift their fronded palms in air, I only know I
cannot drift beyond His love and care. - poem by John Greenleaf Whittier
THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 14:22-33 (page 15 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “When You Begin to Sink” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 234 I to the Hills Will Lift My Eyes
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Partita in C major Thomas Canning
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 361 How Firm a Foundation (verses 1-3, 5)
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Turn Back, O Man Gustav Holst
Earth shall be fair, and all her people one, nor till that hour shall God’s whole will be done. Now, even
now, once more from earth to sky, peals forth in joy man’s old undaunted cry: “Earth shall be fair, and
all her folk be one!”
Congregational Meeting following worship.
