MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR SEPTEMBER 18!
At a meeting of the congregation following worship on Sunday, August 14, Morningside voted to honor Joanna Adams as Pastor Emerita. The vote was unanimous and loud! Joanna and Al will be with us in worship on September 18. Please plan to be present at the reception following worship as we honor Joanna and give thanks for her ministry at Morningside! If you are able to help set up, serve or clean up, please contact Brad Odom jbradleyodom@gmail.com.

She has worked with the Atlanta Children’s Chorale and Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. She currently directs over 100 children in the youth choirs at The Cathedral of Christ the King. Many thanks to MPC member Linda Johnson for her excellent work with the children this past spring and at VBS. The Cherub and Treble Choirs will begin practicing August 31 at 6 p.m. and September 7 respectively. Contact Choir Coordinator Tamara Nix tamaranix @yahoo.com with questions.
DEVOTIONAL BOOKLETS

BAKE SALE AUGUST 28
The 4th and 5th grade Double Digits of Morningside are meeting at 10:15 on Sunday, August 28 to prepare for the bake sale they will run during Fellowship Hour that day. The proceeds will go to victims of the famine in Somalia. We invite you to support this outreach that our Double Digits have organized in response to a need they knew about on the other side of the world.
THE CHOIR WILL LOOK COOLER IN AUGUST…LITERALLY
Due to the heat and elevated temperatures in the Chancel, our choir is going “sans robes” for August. They’ll re-robe in September and as always, we thank our choir for their wonderful leadership in worship!
WELCOME TO PRESCHOOL
Morningside Presbyterian Preschool teachers have returned and are busy getting ready for their students. Parents are invited to Meet and Greet at 7 p.m. this Thursday, August 25. Classes resume Monday, August 29.
LOOK WHO'S TURNING 10!
We are excited to report that this 2011-2012 school year is the 10th Anniversary of Morningside Presbyterian Preschool, one of MPC’s important outreach ministries. For those of us who have been here for a lot of those years (and even folks just joining us), it will be a special year. We have great plans to celebrate this milestone throughout the school year, so we’ll keep you posted of monthly activities and parties to celebrate!
YOUNG ADULTS TO LUNCH
Everyone is welcome to join the Young Adults for lunch at George’s next Sunday, August 28 at 12:30 p.m.
EAT PIZZA TO SUPPORT WOMEN'S SHELTER
On Monday, August 29, 20% of your lunch or dinner tab at Everybody’s Pizza at Emory will be given to the Shearith Israel Shelter for Women. Dine in or take out, bring the kids or have a grown up outing, but plan to eat at Everybody’s to help raise funds for this important outreach for women facing homelessness in our community.
FOOD COLLECTION
We invite you to help fill Intown Collaborative Ministries food pantry as MPC collects pop-top and other easy-to-go non-perishable food items for their pantry through September 4. Donated items can be placed in the Welcome Center baskets. This food pantry provides for those in the 30306 and 30307 zip codes.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
Adult Sunday School Classes
Each Sunday through September 4, the class is studying select chapters from Dr. Peter Gomes’ book, The Good Book; Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart. Dr. Gomes’ book takes a look at how we should read scripture and what scripture actually says on a variety of continually controversial subjects. Next Sunday, August 28 we will look at Chapter 9, “The Bible & The Good Life” with Peter Cobb leading the discussion. Join in and see why some call this book “the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people.” This class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 201.
Children’s Classes
Today, the Preschool Class will talk about how God hears our prayers as they listen to the story A Baby for Hannah. Both the K-1st and 2nd-3rd grade classes will adventure on a mountain top as the disciples find an answer to their question “Who is Jesus?” 4th-5th graders will learn about the creeds from the Worship for Life curriculum.
