21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Melinda Sandkam

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.
Leader: O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
People: I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from
all my fears.
Leader: Look to him, and be radiant, so your faces shall never be ashamed.
People: We have come to worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer.
- Psalm 34:1-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 220 All People That on Earth Do Dwell

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, we confess there are times when faith is not easy. There are times
when the claim of the Gospel upon our lives is costly. There are times when we
would turn aside onto an easier path rather than face what your promises would
elicit from us. Forgive us when in our living we fail to do and be what you have
called for from us. Forgive us when we cannot remember that it is you who have
carried us through the years. And in forgiving us, give us encouragement that we
may be strengthened in our faith and live out the calling you have given us. We
pray all these things in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the
creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding
is unsearchable.
People: He gives power to the faint and strengthens the powerless. Even youths
will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted, but those who
wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with
wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and
not faint.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Isaiah 40:28-31

THE ANTHEM Wait on the Lord Willis L. Barnett
The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeks his will. They that wait patiently
shall find peace. Wait, I say, on the Lord. Believe his holy Word. He shall strengthen thy heart.
They that wait on the Lord God will renew their strength. They shall soar like angels with wings; they
shall run and never become weary; they that wait patiently shall find peace.

THE SECOND LESSON Exodus 1:8-2:10 (page 47 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMONShiphrah and Puah” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 248 You Are Before Me, Lord

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from The Scots Confession
We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to whom alone we must cleave, whom
alone we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom alone we put our
trust. Who is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, invisible;
one in substance and yet distinct in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Ghost. By whom we confess and believe all things in heaven and earth, visible
and invisible, to have been created, to be retained in their being, and to be ruled and
guided by his inscrutable providence for such end as his eternal wisdom, goodness,
and justice have appointed, and to the manifestation of his own glory.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
