BAKE SALE TODAY

MPC’s 4th and 5th grade Double Digits have organized a bake sale during Fellowship Hour today. The proceeds of the sale will go to victims of the famine in Somalia. We invite you to support this Double Digits outreach.

YOUNG ADULTS TO LUNCH

Everyone is welcome to join the Young Adults for lunch at George’s today at 12:30 p.m.

YOUTH GROUP

Our Middle School Youth have kicked off their program year. Next Sunday, September 4 they will enjoy fireworks at Druid Hills Country Club, and September 11, they will prepare and serve dinner at Druid Hills Night Shelter. Your support is needed to make their programming a success. Contact Shannon Lazzaro lazzaroshannon@yahoo.com, if you could provide dinner for youth group one Sunday this fall. Contact Youth Committee Chair Carolyn Morton carolynmorton@bellsouth.net if you can help in other areas.

10th ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11

As our nation approaches the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, Walter Huff and the Chancel Choir are preparing special musical selections to be presented in worship on Sunday, September 11, 2011.  Mark your calendars to be with us.

MPC CONTINUES TO CELEBRATE

On Sunday, September 18, Rev. Joanna Adams will be recognized as Pastor Emerita, a position of honor, appreciation and distinction for her sustaining leadership at Morningside. MPC voted on August 14 to extend this honor to Joanna. Please join us in Fellowship Hall after worship for a reception which will be held in her honor.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR DIRECTOR

We are pleased to report the appointment of Rebecca Shipley as our new Director of Children’s Choirs. Rebecca is a graduate of FSU with a degree in voice and music therapy. She has worked with the Atlanta Children’s Chorale and Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. She currently directs over 100 children in the youth choirs at The Cathedral of Christ the King. Many thanks to MPC member Linda Johnson for her excellent work with the children this past spring and at VBS. The Cherub and Treble Choirs will begin practicing Wednesdays, August 31 at 6 p.m. and September 7 respectively. Contact Choir Coordinator Tamara Nix tamaranix @yahoo.com with questions.

EAT AND SUPPORT WOMEN'S SHELTER

Tomorrow, August 29, 20% of your lunch or dinner tab at Everybody’s Pizza at Emory will be given to the Shearith Israel Shelter for Women.  Dine in or take out, bring the kids or have a grown up outing, but plan to eat at Everybody’s to help raise funds for this important outreach for women facing homelessness.

ADULT MISSION TRIP

Morningside members are returning to Nashville to assist with the long term recovery efforts of the area devastated by the spring floods of 2010. In conjunction with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, we will work with families whose homes were damaged or destroyed and are still awaiting help. We will leave Wednesday, September 14 and return Saturday, September 17. The cost is $60 per person and meals and lodging will be provided by our host, Westminster Presbyterian Church. Checks to MPC are due today. If you are interested in going or for more information, contact Duncan Spears (678.612.5746; duncanspears @yahoo.com).

THE CHOIR LOOKS COOLER…LITERALLY

Due to the heat and elevated temperatures in the Chancel, our choir is going “sans robes” for August. They’ll re-robe in September and as always, we thank our choir for their wonderful leadership in worship!

FOOD COLLECTION

We invite you to help fill Intown Collaborative Ministries food pantry as MPC collects pop-top and other easy-to-go non-perishable food items for their pantry through September 4.  ICM is currently serving record numbers of homeless men and women. Donated items can be placed in the Welcome Center baskets. This food pantry provides for those in the 30306/30307 zip codes.

LYDIA CIRCLE

After taking a summer reprieve, Lydia Circle will start up again on Thursday, September 8. Lydia Circle is a group of young female professionals and moms that welcomes members and visitors of MPC to join them on September 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the home of Carrie Branon (786 San Antonio Dr., NE  30306). Email Tara Parrish (taraparrish @bellsouth.net) to RSVP or for more information.

COUPLES GROUP

All couples are invited to the next gathering of the Couples Group at the home of Linda and Art Sweum on Friday, September 9 at 7 p.m. Appetizers and the main course will be provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert and your favorite beverage. Contact Kathy and Alan Bremer (404.872.3001; kathyday bremer@gmail.com) to RSVP or for more information.

HOMES

On Saturday, September 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., MPC will participate in Home Owner Maintenance and Enhancement for Seniors, a program of Senior Citizens Services of Metro Atlanta serving seniors since 1965. Volunteers are needed. The work is usually light repairs and painting. Supplies are provided. Look for the signup sheet on the mission bulletin board in the hallway at church and join other MPC members working on this worthwhile ministry or contact Jack Klotz (jacksklotz@gmail.com).

YOUNG ADULTS

You are invited to join the Young Adults at the home of Leslie and Lloyd Prince (91 Lakeview Dr., 30317) on Saturday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m. We will celebrate the end of summer and raise a toast to MPC newlyweds Andrea and John Morgan and Katherine and David Johnston. Please bring an appetizer to share and your favorite beverage. RSVP to Leslie Prince(leslieprince@comcast.net).

CELEBRATING CLIFTON SANCTUARY

You are invited to sign up on the mission bulletin board or contact Tony Fishpaw at tony@firstfidelityatl.com if you would like to join other MPC members at the Clifton Sanctuary Ministries Dinner at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 25 at the MPC table. The dinner is being held at North Avenue Presbyterian Church.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

Adult Sunday School Classes

Next Sunday, September 4, we will conclude our studies of select chapters from Dr. Peter Gomes’ book, The Good Book; Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart.  Dr. Gomes’ book takes a look at how we should read scripture and what scripture actually says on a variety of continually controversial subjects. We will look at Chapter 8, “The Bible & Homosexuality” with Ken Sharpe leading the discussion.  Join in and see why some call this book “the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people.”  This class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 201.

Children’s Classes

This morning, in A Prayer for Peter, preschool children will hear how God answered the prayers of Peter’s friends. Both the K-1st and 2nd-3rd grade classes will take a last summer adventure in the lesson “Breakfast on the Beach” as they learn how Jesus told his disciples to continue his ministry. 4th-5th graders will learn about prayer from the Worship for Life curriculum.
