ADULTThis Sunday, September 4, we will conclude our studies of Dr. Peter Gomes’ book, The Good Book; Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart.  Dr. Gomes’ book has given us a look at how we should read scripture and what scripture actually says on a variety of continually controversial subjects. This Sunday, we will look at Chapter 8, “The Bible & Homosexuality” with Ken Sharpe leading the discussion. This class meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 201.

CHILDREN: The Preschool Class will respond to the story It’s a Noisy Place! with animal activities that include making some noise. Elementary Classes “go green” as they learn how God made Adam and Eve caretakers for all Creation. “Double Digits” will have an intro for today’s worship as they prepare to join the congregation for the Worship Hour.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
In the time we have it is surely our duty to do all the good we can to all the people we can in all the ways we can. - William Barclay

GUEST SOLOIST THIS SUNDAY
We welcome Maria Clark, soprano, as our guest soloist this Sunday.  Maria was a featured performer in the Atlanta Opera’s recent production of Porgy and Bess.

YOUTH GROUP
Our Middle School Youth are off to a great start. This Sunday, September 4 they will enjoy fireworks at Druid Hills Country Club, and September 11, they will prepare and serve dinner at Druid Hills Night Shelter. We need your help supporting this vital new ministry. Contact Shannon Lazzaro lazzaroshannon@yahoo.com, if you could provide dinner for youth group one Sunday this fall. Contact Youth Committee Chair Carolyn Morton carolynmorton@bellsouth.net if you can help in other areas.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR DIRECTOR
We are pleased to report the appointment of Rebecca Shipley as our new Director of Children’s Choirs. The Cherub and Treble Choirs will begin practicing August 31 at 6 p.m. and September 7 respectively. Contact Choir Coordinator Tamara Nix tamaranix @yahoo.com with questions.

FOOD COLLECTION
Intown Collaborative Ministries is currently serving record numbers of homeless men and women. We invite you to help fill ICM’s food pantry as MPC collects pop-top food items for their pantry through this Sunday, September 4.  Donated items can be placed in the Welcome Center baskets.

10TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11
As our nation approaches the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, Walter Huff and the Chancel Choir are preparing special musical selections to be presented in worship on Sunday, September 11, 2011.  Mark your calendars to be with us.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR SEPTEMBER 18!
MPC continues to celebrate! On Sunday, September 18, Rev. Joanna Adams will be recognized as Pastor Emerita, a position of honor, appreciation and distinction for her sustaining leadership at Morningside. MPC voted to extend this honor to Joanna on August 14.  Please join us in Fellowship Hall after worship for a reception which will be held in her honor.
