WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 4, 2011
23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Daisy Ottmann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: O come let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of
our salvation!
People: Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful
noise to him with songs of praises!
Leader: For the Lord is a great God, and a great king above all gods. In his hands are the
depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
People: The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands
have formed.
Leader: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
People: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the sheep of
his hand.
Leader: Let us worship God, who creates us, redeems and sustains us, Amen. -Psalm 95:1-6

* THE HYMN 469 Morning Has Broken

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, our creator and sustainer, once more we confess to you, our redeemer,
that we have sinned. Of the good news entrusted to our care, we have
spoken a little. Of the actions called for by discipleship, we have undertaken a
few. We can do more. We know that you are calling us into a way of life that
makes your way known to all your children. We have sinned and fallen short of
our calling. So forgive us, we pray, and recreate us as followers of the risen Christ,
on whom we have cast our trust. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though
we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in
that way.
People: So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has
passed away, see, everything has become new.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - 2 Corinthians 5:16-17

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.

* THE HYMN 172 My Shepherd Will Supply My Need

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
