WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 18, 2011
25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING David York
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
People: Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
Leader: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
People: For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered
above all gods. For all the gods of the people are idols, but the Lord
made the heavens.
Leader: Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Amen. - Psalm 96:1-5
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 138 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, you have loved us from generation to generation. You have shown
your faithfulness more often than we can recall. The stories of the Bible tell us as
often as we will look of your steadfast mercy. Yet we live as though it would be
better for us not to know. We live holding on to past hurts; we are not open to
your new creation. We prefer the safety of what we know to the excitement of discipleship.
Forgive us, we pray, and make us again as you would have us be. We
make all of our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great:
People: He was revealed in flesh, vindicated in spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed
among the Gentiles, believed in through the world, taken up in glory.
Leader: Friends, believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - 1 Timothy 3:16
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and
friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our
hymn of grateful praise.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-yearolds in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 003; 4th-5th are in Room 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 40:28-31 (page 628 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM The Prayer of Saint Francis René Clausen
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring love; where there is
injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, let me bring faith; where there is despair, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, let me bring light; where there is sorrow, let me bring joy. O Lord, Master
divine, grant that I not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, and in pardoning that we are pardoned.
For in dying, we are born to eternal life. Amen.
THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 28:16-20 (page 32 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “The Power of Hope” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 335 Though I May Speak
* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Brief Statement of Faith
In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus!
With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Adonai, Adonai (from Chichester Psalms) Leonard Bernstein
(sung in Hebrew)
Quartet: Megan Mashburn, Tami Giusto, Chris Boggs, Rob Cromwell
Lord, Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty, neither do I exercise myself in great matters
or in things too wonderful for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of
its mother; my soul is even as a weaned child. Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and forever.
Behold how good, and how pleasant it is, for brethren to dwell together in unity. - Psalm 131/133
THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
RECOGNITION OF JOANNA ADAMS AS PASTOR EMERITA
* THE HYMN 420 God of Grace and God of Glory (verses 1, 2 and 4)
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE God of Grace and God of Glory Paul Langston
Set our feet on lofty places; gird our lives that they may be armored with all Christ-like graces, pledged
to set all captives free. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, that we fail not them nor Thee!
