A WORD FROM BARON MULLIS
We are always blessed by our choir’s inspiring leadership in worship. In recent memory, however, Walter Huff has lead the choir in ways that added even more meaning to our worship and a particular word of thanks is called for: the service of worship on 9/11 and the celebration of Joanna Adams as Pastor Emerita. We are deeply grateful to each choir member and Walter for your service in leading us. Thank you!
HAITI PILGRIMAGE
There are currently six from our MPC community traveling in Haiti. This morning, they are worshiping at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys and will then return to Wings for Hope. They continue mid-week on to Trinity School in Jacmel. Please keep Greg, Bryan, Tony, Tim, Shannon and Brad in your prayers, as well as, all the children and staff of all three Hearts with Haiti programs.
NEW MEMBER GATHERING
Anyone who joined the church in the past year is invited to dinner at Leslie and Lloyd Prince’s home (91 Lakeview Drive, 30317) at 5 p.m. this evening. Contact Leslie Prince with questions (leslieprince@comcast.net).
MPP DINES OUT OCTOBER 4
Join us at La Tavola (992 Virginia Ave.) this Tuesday when our friends at Fifth Group Restaurants will donate 20 percent of the night’s proceeds to Morningside’s Preschool! Dinner is served from 5:30-10 p.m. and be sure to let them know you are coming for the Preschool Dine Out. Reserve your table at 404.873.5430.
THEOLOGY ON TAP
TOT will meet at the home of Ken Sharpe (1700 Timberland Road, Atlanta, 30345) at 7 p.m. this Tuesday, October 4. This month’s discussion topic led by Baron Mullis is: "Can I ever get a break? The practice of Sabbath keeping - is it a commandment whose time has come?" RSVP to the church at office@morningsidepc.org or 404.876.7396.
LGBT PRIDE IN OCTOBER
Presbyterians will celebrate LGBT Pride this October, so mark your calendars now! Morningside and North Decatur Presbyterian Churches are partnering to lead the following events: This afternoon at 4:15 p.m. join Covenant Network’s Tricia Dykers Koening as we discuss where the church is post Amendment A at North Decatur (611 Medlock Rd., Decatur, 30033). This Thursday, October 6 at 7 p.m. here at Morningside you are invited to join in the annual Pride service of worship welcoming Rev. David Lewicki, Co-Pastor of North Decatur, as the guest preacher. Next Sunday, October 9, join Presbyterians as we walk in the annual Pride Parade. For more information, contact Trenton Tunnell trentoniii@bellsouth.net and Collier Maxwell colliermaxwell@hotmail.com
DOUBLE DIGITS IN ACTION
Next Sunday, October 9, Double Digits will make dessert for the men at Druid Hills Shelter at 10:15 a.m. with the 2nd and 3rd graders.
YOUTH GROUP
Next weekend, MPC Middle Schoolers will be attending the fall retreat at Calvin Center for the weekend, so there will not be youth group Sunday evening. Regular youth group 5-7 p.m. on Sundays returns October 16.
PROVIDE A MEAL FOR YOUTH GROUP
Contact Tish Woolley (woolleyt@gmail.com) if you can provide dinner for youth group on a Sunday evening.
OFFICER NOMINATING COMMITTEE
The Officer Nominating Committee will begin accepting nominations for Elders and Deacons today. As you think about nominations for these leadership roles, keep in mind what the Book of Order states about church leaders, “In addition to possessing the necessary gifts and abilities, natural and acquired, those who undertake particular ministries should be persons of strong faith, dedicated discipleship and love of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord” (G-6.0106a). Officer Nomination Forms are in today’s bulletin and will also be in October 9’s bulletin. When nominating, be sure the person is willing to serve a three-year term. For more information, contact an ONC member (Jill Davis, Ellen Brown Landers, Bill Means, Leslie Prince or Doug Self). Forms should be returned to the church office or folded in the offering plate by October 16.
SORT AT FOOD PANTRY
MPC will provide volunteers to sort and distribute items at Intown Collaborative Ministries’ Food Pantry (located at Druid Hills Methodist, corner of Briarcliff and Ponce) on Saturday, October 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign up today on the mission bulletin board or contact Nancy Collins ncollins0209 @gmail.com with questions.
LYDIA CIRCLE
The next Lydia Circle meeting will be Thursday, October 13. Lydia Circle, a group of young female professionals and moms, welcomes members and visitors of MPC to join them from 7-9 p.m. at the home of Dawn Bell (901 Virginia Avenue NE, 30306). Please email Tara Parrish to RSVP and for any other details (taraparrish@bellsouth.net)
JOIN US AT MONTREAT OCTOBER 14-16
It’s not too late to sign up for the retreat! Spaces are still available, if you can sign up today. Come join us for fun, fellowship and three sessions with Professor Peter Hobbie on “Growing in Faith”: 1) Knowing who we are: what distinguishes Presbyterians from other Christians 2) Loving our neighbors: understanding how our beliefs differ from those of other major world religions and 3) Keeping the faith: practices that strengthen our faith ... as individuals, as families, as citizens. Forms are available in the Welcome Center and Narthex.
