WORSHIP OCTOBER 9, 2011
28th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Melinda Sandkam
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it;
for he has founded it on the seas and established it on the rivers.
People: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord and who shall stand in his
holy place?
Leader: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls
to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.
People: They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from
the God of their salvation.
Leader: Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God
of Jacob. Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Amen.
- Psalm 24:1-6

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 477 Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, you are the same from age to age. In every age, your people have
sought to know you and to know your mind and your will for us. And in every
age, we have had times when what we have said and done reflected the way you
would have us live, and we have had times when what we have said and done did
not reflect the way you would have us live. We turn to idols rather than trusting in
a living God. And yet, through it all, you are faithful to us. And so we confess our
failures knowing that we rest in your abiding goodness, assured of your love for us
all. Hear our prayers as we make them in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord;
People: “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,”
Leader: He also adds,
People: “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Leader: Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Hebrews 10:16-18

THE ANTHEM Rejoice in the Lord Alway Henry Purcell
Trio - Tami Giusto, Chris Boggs, Chris Hawkins
Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, rejoice! Be careful for nothing, but in everything by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God; and the
peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus
Christ our Lord.

THE SECOND LESSON Exodus 32:1-14 (page 75 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMONIdols” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 396 O for a Closer Walk with God

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
