WORSHIP OCTOBER 16, 2011
29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Meredith Loftis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim;
let the earth quake!
People: The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.
Leader: Let them praise your great and awesome name. Holy is he!
People: Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; you
have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Leader: Extol the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our
God is holy. Let us worship God! - from Psalm 99

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 263 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide
from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves, and apart from
you. We have turned from our neighbors, and refused to bear the burdens of others.
We have ignored the pain of the world, and passed by the hungry, the poor,
and the oppressed. In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us from selfishness,
that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus
Christ our Savior. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has passed away;
the new has come.
People: All this is from God, who reconciled himself to us through Christ and
has given us the ministry of reconciliation.
Leader: That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their
trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.
Believe the Promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 210)
Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting Thou art
God, to endless years the same.

THE MINUTE MESSAGE Al Adams

THE FIRST LESSON Exodus 33:12-23 (page 77 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM God of Comfort, God of Courage Wilbur Chenoweth
God of comfort, God of courage, present help in time of need, who the fainting soul doth nourish, make us
strong in faith and deed. Though the mountains shake and crumble in the mighty crashing of the sea; keep us steadfast, humble, ungirded, Lord, by thee. Through the ages moves a river, faithful souls who do thy will, ever giving to the giver, those thy purpose shall fulfill. ‘Tis that pathway we are seeking, which thy loyal saints have always trod; through earth’s turmoil thou art speaking: “Peace! Be still! And know thy God.” Yea, thy purpose moving in us breaks the bow and stills the fray, from all hate and fear shall win us, proving love the only way. At thy whisper wars may cease to the borders of the earth. Understanding may increase bringing a new world to birth. They that labor in thy spirit shall their strength and power renew, shall the peace of God inherit—one with thee. Like the eagle bravely soaring, they shall rise up strong. They shall triumph, thee adoring—God, the source of all in all.

THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 22:15-22 (page 23 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONImpossible Choices, Unexpected Opportunities” Katherine Higgins

* THE HYMN 413 All Who Love and Serve Your City

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY O That I Had a Thousand Voices Paul Manz

* THE HYMN 284 O God, What You Ordain Is Right

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE The Lord Watch Between Me and Thee David Eddleman
The Lord watch between me and Thee. Amen. – Genesis 31:49
