WORSHIP OCTOBER 30, 2011
31st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Jack Klotz
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his
handiwork.
People: Day to day pours forth speech and night declares knowledge.
Leader: There is no speech nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their
voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
People: The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament
proclaims his handiwork. Let us worship God!
Leader: Let us worship God, creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 19:1-4

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 482 Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, you are the good master. You alone can do exceedingly abundantly
more than that we could ever ask or imagine. To you alone belong all glory and
honor in the church forevermore. And yet, too often we praise you as though you
are commonplace and ordinary. Too often we fail to register your goodness and
mercy. And far too often, we are mute where good words might make all the difference.
Forgive our willingness to worship feebly. Forgive our ability to settle for
less than the God that you are. Open our lips that we may sing your praise.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
People: But we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are,
yet without sin.
Leader: Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive
mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. - Hebrews 4:15-16

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.

THE FIRST LESSON Micah 3:5-12 (page 814 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM Thou Shalt Know Him When He Comes Hal Hopson
Thou shalt know Him when He comes, not by any din of drums, nor the manner of His airs, nor by
anything He wears. Thou shalt know Him when he comes, not by His crown or His gown. But, His coming
known shall be by the holy harmony, which His coming makes in thee. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 23:1-12 (page 24 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONTis Good to be Humble” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 419 How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
forever. Amen.
