WORSHIP NOVEMBER 13, 2011
33rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
People: To declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness
by night.
Leader: To the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre.
People: For you, O Lord have made me glad by your work; at the works of
your hands I will sing for joy.
Leader: Let us worship God, who has created, redeemed and sustained us. Amen.
- Psalm 92
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 414 As Those of Old Their Firstfruits Brought
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, creator of the winds and rains, sun and moon, the earth and all that
is in it, too often we utter your praises without pausing to consider what it is we
sing. Too often, our words bear no evidence that we bear the imprint of your
Word. Too often, we mumble our joy, suppress our sorrow and live as though you
do not matter. Forgive us, we pray, for our attempts to domesticate your transcendence.
Break through into our hearts and lives and minds, and transform us by
your power. Through Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce
impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are
self-controlled, upright and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the
manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
People: He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all
iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for
good deeds.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Titus 2:11-14
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 276)
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I
see; all I have needed Thy hand hath provided; great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST

the City of God! Bring forth the reign of mercy, bring forth the reign of peace; bring forth the reign of
justice, bring forth the City of God! You are a light on the hill, O people: light for the City of God! Shine
so holy and bright, O people: shine for the City of God! You are a seed of the Word, O people: bring
forth the reign of God! Seeds of mercy and seeds of justice, grow in the City of God! We are a blessed and

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from The Westminster Confession of Faith
Good works are only such as God hath commanded in his holy Word, and not such
as, without the warrant thereof, are devised by men out of blind zeal, or upon any pretense
of good intention. These good works done in obedience to God’s commandments,
are the fruits and evidences of a true and lively faith: and by them believers manifest
their thankfulness, strengthen their assurance, edify their brethren, adorn the profession
of the gospel, stop the mouths of the adversaries, and glorify God, whose workmanship
they are, created in Christ Jesus thereunto, that, having their fruit unto holiness,
they may have the end, eternal life. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Awake the Trumpet’s Lofty Sound (from Samson) G.F. Handel
Mark Mashburn, trumpet
Awake the trumpet’s lofty sound. The morning dawns, our hearts with joy abound when Christ, the
King of all the earth, is crowned.
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 467 How Great Thou Art (verses 1, 2, and 4)
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Great Is Thy Faithfulness Runyan, arr. Martin
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today
and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten-thousand beside!
