WORSHIP NOVEMBER 20, 2011
CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY
THE GATHERING Shavon Starling-Louis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
THE INTROIT Sound the Trumpet Henry Purcell
Christine Butz and Tami Giusto, soloists
Sound the trumpet till around, you make the listening shores rebound. On the sprightly oboe play --
all the instruments of joy that skillful numbers can employ to celebrate the glories of this day.
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord.
People: Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time on and forever
more. From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord
is to be praised.
Leader: The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is
like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the
heavens and the earth?
People: He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives
the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord.
Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 113
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 220 All People That on Earth Do Dwell
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, you are the good master. You alone can do exceedingly abundantly
more than we could ever ask or imagine. To you alone belong all glory and honor in
the church forevermore. And yet, too often we praise you as though you are commonplace
and ordinary. Too often we fail to register your goodness and mercy. And
far too often, we are mute where good words might make all the difference. Forgive
our willingness to worship feebly. Forgive our ability to settle for less than the God
that you are. Open our lips that we may sing forth your praise. Through Jesus Christ
our Lord, Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound?
People: By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it?
Leader: Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death?
People: Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we
too might walk in newness of life.
Leader: Believe the promise of the gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Romans 6:1-4
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 139)
To Thee, great One in Three, the highest praises be, hence evermore!
Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-yearolds in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 003; 4th-5th are in Room 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Ephesians 3:16-21 (page 182 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE ANTHEM I Waited for the Lord Felix Mendelssohn
Megan Mashburn and Sheryl Wingert, soloists
I waited for the Lord, he inclined unto me. He heard my complaint. O blessed are they that hope and
trust in the Lord.
THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 25:14-30 (page 27 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “From Whom All Blessings Flow” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 555 Now Thank We All Our God
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Gavotte Samuel Wesley
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 142 All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name!
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE To Him Be the Glory Walt Harrah
To Him be the glory forever and forever. To Him be all power, dominion, authority. Amen.
