1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE INTROIT Prepare the Way, O Zion arr. Oemler

Prepare the way, O Zion, your Christ is drawing near! Let every hill and valley a level way appear.
Greet One who comes in glory, foretold in sacred story. O blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy
name. Fling wide your gates, O Zion; your Savior’s rule embrace. And tidings of salvation proclaim in
every place. All lands will bow rejoicing, their adoration voicing. O blest is Christ that came in God’s
most holy name.

Eternal God, source of all light and life, we give you thanks for the coming of Christ,
the light that shines in the darkness, the life of all people. Let us walk in the light of
the Lord. Amen.

THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, even as we seek your blessings upon us, we know that we cannot
merit them. Our lives stand, not as testimony to your goodness, but as reminders
of our sin. We have failed at our calling to be your people and show to the world
who you are. And so, in honesty we come seeking your healing touch upon our
lives; your cleansing Word to our sin. Forgive us, we pray, for our failures, and
help us live as though we are the recipients of grace upon grace. We ask in the
name of Jesus, and for our sake. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord;
People: “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,”
Leader: He also adds,
People: “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Leader: Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Hebrews 10:16-18

how will we know Him, Lord? Seek in the radiance of hope and of peace, seek in the bright
flame of joy, seek in the light and the goodness of love, but seek Him first in your heart.
Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, joy of every longing heart. O come to my heart, Lord Jesus:
there’s room in my heart for Thee.
