WORSHIP JANUARY 22, 2012
3RD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY / NEW MEMBER SUNDAY
THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights!
People: Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his hosts!
Leader: Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!
People: Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!
Leader: Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created.
People: He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which
cannot be passed.
Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. - Psalm 148:1-6
THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 457 I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art
(verses 1 through 4)
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, though we are made in your image, we fail to live as you made us
to live. Where we have missed opportunities to serve, we need forgiveness.
Where we have been unkind, we need forgiveness. Where we have caused pain,
we need forgiveness. Where we harbor guilt and unease, we need forgiveness.
For what we know but cannot name, we need forgiveness. So remake us, we pray.
Call us and lead us where you would have us go. Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has passed away;
the new has come.
People: All this is from God, who reconciled himself to us through Christ
and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.
Leader: That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their
trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. Believe
the Promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - 2 Corinthians 5:17-19
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 210)
Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting Thou art
God, to endless years the same.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-8 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-year olds in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 003.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS
THE FIRST LESSON Jonah 3:1-5 (page 811 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts Claude Bass
Jesus, Thou joy of loving hearts, Thou fount of life, Thou light of men, from the best bliss that earth
imparts, we turn unfilled to Thee again. Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; Thou savest those that on
Thee call; to them who seek Thee Thou art good, to them who find Thee all in all. Our restless spirits
yearn for Thee, where’er our changeful lot is cast; glad when Thy gracious smile we see, blest when our
faith can hold Thee fast. O Jesus, ever with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright; chase the dark
night of sin away, shed o’er the world Thy holy light. - text by Bernard of Clairvaux
THE SECOND LESSON Mark 1:14-20 (page 33 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON "Fish Stories" Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 525 Here I Am, Lord
THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Day by Day Ahnfelt, arr. Porter
THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
THE HYMN 411 Arise, Your Light Is Come!
THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Thanks Be to God (excerpt) Thomas Matthews
For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness” has shown in our hearts to give light of
the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Christ. In Him all the promises of God find
their Yes! That is why we utter the Amen through Him, to the glory of God!
