Sunday, February 26, the youth will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. at MPC to discuss “Who is Jesus?” from PCUSA’s Frequently Asked Questions for Youth!
LENTEN MISSION TRIP
An informational meeting will be held today at 12:15 p.m. in Room 201 for MPC’s Mission Trip to North Alabama, March 15-17. If interested, you may also contact contact Duncan Spears (678.612.5476; duncanspears@yahoo.com). The trip will focus on helping the community rebuild after the devastating 2011 tornado. Departure: Thursday at 5 p.m.; returning Saturday evening. Meals and lodging are provided; no cost for the two nights. Registration deadline: March 1.
RHO READERS
RHO Readers, an eclectic and co-ed book group, will meet today at 12:45 p.m. in the Session Room to discuss the current best-seller “Death Comes to Pemberley” by P. D. James. All are welcome.
SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER AND PAJAMA PARTY
Everyone is invited to celebrate Shrove Tuesday at our annual Pancake Supper and Pajama Party this Tuesday, February 21, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Children are invited to wear their pajamas! Morningside’s Treble Choir will sing and you can enjoy dinner with the family while Ruby the Clown (Reuben Haller) as “The Cat in the Hat” delights kids and adults! Please bring NEW pajamas, socks and underwear for THREADS, a children’s ministry at All Saints Episcopal. Volunteers are still needed for the second shift 5:45-7:15 p.m. RSVP to attend or sign up to volunteer on the bulletin board next to the office or contact Jenn James jennjames@comcast.net.
ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE
Lent begins at Morningside with our worship service and imposition of ashes this Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. (childcare available). We invite you this year as a Lenten discipline to add something instead of, or in addition to, giving up something. Beginning Ash Wednesday, Lent Mission Calendars will be available with a list of mission experience ideas (some unique to the Lenten season) for you and your family. Find your mission experience and brighten someone’s day!
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
MPC's partnership with Habitat and four other area churches has begun. We are building a home in the Thomasville Heights neighborhood for a family of five from Liberia. Build dates continue every Saturday through March. Look for signup sheets on the Habitat bulletin board or contact Lynsley Tyler (lynsley@bellsouth.net) for details. We also need lunch providers for Saturday, March 17.
THEATER OUTING
Actor Brad Sherrill has created a new play called “Red Letter Jesus” based on the words that Jesus says in the gospels. MPC will attend as a group on Sunday, March 4 at 2:30 p.m. at Theater on the Square in Marietta. To purchase group tickets, turn your check into the church office by today. Cost is $23 to MPC. Contact Katherine Johnston with questions kecjohnston@ gmail.com.
WOMEN’S ROUNDTABLE
Women’s Roundtable will be held February 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Lynn Young’s home (277 The Prado). Our speaker will be our own Barbara Ray, who has many wonderful and inspiring stories to share. Dinner and drinks will be provided. RSVP to Kim Knight Perez kimkperez@gmail.com.
LENTEN WALKING
If you are seeking a Lenten discipline that involves taking care of yourself and spending time with others in the MPC community, consider joining a walking group for five Lenten Thursdays in March. We will begin on March 1 and 8 by walking 5:30-6:30 p.m. After Daylight Saving Time, we will then walk 6-7 p.m. on March 15, 22, 29. Plan to meet at the church for departure to walk for an hour in the neighborhood. Contact Melinda Sandkam with any questions or to RSVP for some or all five dates!
BOBO NEEDS YOU!
Our growing youth program has great plans for a summer trip combining spiritual growth and service with getting to know their peers from all over the country. To support this and other activities, it's time again to donate items for BOBO--our Buy One/Boost One auction to support youth mission and programs. Last year's event was a rousing success and lots of fun. Please forward a description, the retail value and your desired minimum opening bid to Carolyn Morton (carolynmorton @bellsouth.net) no later than March 12. Preview date will be March 18, with the auction during fellowship hour March 25.
HIGHER GROUND
What do an Imam, two Christian ministers, a Rabbi and Atlanta’s greatest community philanthropic resource have in common? Why Higher Ground, of course! These four dynamic Atlanta faith leaders were brought together by The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta to raise awareness of key issues affecting our community and to inspire positive change. Faith-based, but not faith-biased, Imam Plemon El-Amin, Rev. Joanna Adams, Rabbi Alvin Sugarman and Rev. Joseph Roberts blog on issues, challenges and successes while demonstrating that we can collaborate to create a stronger community. If you are looking for new perspectives, check out Higher Ground and subscribe to the blog via: http://www.highergroundgroup.org.
SANCTUARY FLOWERS
A flower calendar is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway outside the Session Room, and if you wish to give flowers in honor or in memory of a loved one, we invite you to write your name and phone number next to the desired date. It is possible to share a date with other members if you want to give one arrangement or you may sign up alone to give both arrangements. Contact Anna Best in the church office office@morningsidepc.org for more information.
YOUTH GROUP
If you can provide dinner for our youth group on a Sunday evening, please contact Tish Woolley (woolleyt@gmail.com)
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
Adult Sunday School Class—9:45 a.m. in Room 201
Next Sunday, we continue our study of the curriculum “Feasting on the Word.” Edited by Barbara Brown Taylor and David Bartlett, this curriculum explores the scripture reading that will be used in worship that morning. The leader will be Sarah Tomaka.
Bible Study—What Happens in Corinth Stays in Corinth—9:45 a.m. in Room 107
Join us Sunday in Room 107 as we explore Paul's efforts to establish a Christian church in a town dominated by the temple of Aphrodite, goddess of love. This old Greek city was a byword for excess and sexual license. It was hard to imagine a less likely place for the Christian message to take root. Class begins promptly at 9:45 and adjourns at 10:30. All are welcome. For more information contact Link Marx fmarx25@yahoo.com
Children’s Classes
Today, the Preschool Class will hear A Little Lunch and learn how a boy helped Jesus feed a great crowd. The K-1st and 2nd & 3rd grade classes will hear and respond to the familiar story of a visit Jesus made to Mary and Martha’s home.
