WORSHIP FEBRUARY 19, 2012
TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

THE GATHERING Shavon Starling-Louis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.
Leader: O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
People: I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from
all my fears.
Leader: Look to him, and be radiant, so your faces shall never be ashamed.
People: We have come to worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer.
- Psalm 34:1-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 263 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, at our best, we fall short of the discipleship you call forth from each
of us. At our worst, we belie the grace given us in Jesus Christ. Our sin remains
before us, and we are powerless to save ourselves. The strength of our own
efforts cannot make us whole. Wholeness comes only from you, and we affirm
once more our need of your grace. Forgive our sin, we pray, and work wonderfully
within us so that faithful discipleship may indeed shine forth as a light to the
nations, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to
renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are
self-controlled, upright and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the
manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
People: He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all
iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous
for good deeds.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. - Titus 2:11-14

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.

THE MINUTE MESSAGE Curt Barrett

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ’s church.
We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Baptized in Water Gaelic melody

THE FIRST LESSON 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 (page 169 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM Christ’s Flock Martin Shaw
In Christ’s own flock, let love be surely placed. From Christ’s own flock, let concord hate expel. Of
Christ’s own flock, let love be so embraced, as we in Christ, and Christ in us may dwell. Christ is the
author of all unity from whence proceedeth all felicity. O sing unto this glittering, glorious King. Let
heart and voice like bells of silver ring. Alleluia.
(dedicated by the composer to the Church of St. Francis, Ngong, Kenya)

THE SECOND LESSON Mark 9:2-9 (page 41 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONShine!” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 340 Eternal Light, Shine in My Heart

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
