WORSHIP FEBRUARY 26, 2012
1ST SUNDAY OF LENT

THE GATHERING Shavon Starling-Louis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Our hearts are steadfast, O Lord, our hearts are steadfast; we will sing
and make melody.
People: Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn.
Leader: We will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples, and we will sing
praises to you among the nations.
People: Your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your
faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Leader: Let us worship God, our maker, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 108:1-4

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 487 When Morning Gilds the Skies

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, remind us of your unmerited, unconditional love for sinners as we
listen to your Word that we might acknowledge our sin, take comfort in your forgiveness
freely given, and turn ourselves to the way you would have us go. We ask
these things because we know that we have sinned, and we need forgiveness.
Guide our hearts and our minds in this moment and in each passing moment that
we might be more and more the disciples you have called, and that we might offer
the grace we have received to others. We pray this in the name of the one who carried
our sin, the righteous for the unrighteous, our Lord Jesus, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman,
born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that
we might receive adoption as children.
People: And because you are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son
unto our hearts, crying: “Abba, Father!”
Leader: So you are no longer a slave, but a child, and if a child, then also an heir, through God.
Believe the Promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Galatians 4:4-7

(page 7 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM Lord, for Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake Farrant/Hilton
Lord, for Thy tender mercy’s sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past and
give us grace to amend our sinful lives; to decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may
walk in a perfect heart before Thee, now and evermore. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON Mark 1:9-15 (page 33 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONThe Righteous for the Unrighteous” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 293 This Is My Father’s World

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from The Second Helvetic Confession
We are saved by grace and the favor of Christ alone. Works necessarily proceed
from faith. And salvation is improperly attributed to them, but is most properly ascribed
to grace. The apostle’s sentence is well known: “If it is by grace, then it is no
longer of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. But if it is of works, then
it is no longer grace, because otherwise work is no longer work.”
Good works please God. Now the works which we do by faith are pleasing to God
and are approved by him. Because of faith in Christ, those who do good works which,
moreover, are done from God’s grace through the Holy Spirit, are pleasing to God.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Adagio in A Minor J.S. Bach

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 361 How Firm a Foundation (verses 1 through 5)

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE The Lord Is My Shepherd (excerpt) David Childs
Goodness and mercy all my life shall follow me wherever I walk. And in God’s house, my
dwelling place shall be forevermore.
