WORSHIP MARCH 11, 2012
3RD SUNDAY OF LENT
THE GATHERING Chris Peters
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of
the faithful.
People: Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him
with tambourine and lyre.
Leader: For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with victory.
People: Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their couches.
Leader: Let us worship God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. - Psalm 149: 1, 3-5
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 356 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Most gracious God, you are the source of our life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Too often, we boast not in you, but in ourselves and in our feeble attempts to live unto our-selves. Justice does not flow down like waters, the ever-flowing stream of right-eousness has dried up. Forgive us, and call us again to live into Christ, and wit-ness by our actions not to human wisdom, but instead to divine foolishness. Through Christ our Lord we pray all these things. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where
Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,
for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in
glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-8 are invited to leave after the Baptism for special classes. Three through five-year-olds in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grades are in Room 003.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ’s church.
We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.
THE CHORAL RESPONSE Baptized in Water Gaelic melody
THE FIRST LESSON Exodus 20:1-17 (page 63 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM Out of the Deep (from Requiem) John Rutter
Charae Krueger, cello
Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. O let thine ears consider well: the voice of my complaint. If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss: O Lord, who may abide it? For there is mercy with thee: therefore shalt thou be feared. I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him: in his word is my trust. My soul fleeth unto the Lord; before the morning watch, I say, be-fore the morning watch. O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy and with him is plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel from all his sins. - Psalm 130
THE SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 (page 156 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “Divine Foolishness” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 339 Be Thou My Vision
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sit-teth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Guide Me Ever, O Redeemer Dale Wood
