Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever,
People: with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
Leader: I declare that your steadfast love is established forever,
People: your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
Leader: Let us worship the Lord our God, who has created, redeemed and sustained us.
- Psalm 89:1-2
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 457 I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art
(verses 1 through 4)
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of love, we confess that we have not loved as we have been loved. We have
allowed the world’s way of loving to shape our actions and our thoughts rather
than your holy way of loving. We have loved selfishly, grasping; seeking for ourselves.
You have loved selflessly, giving and living for others. You have shown us
what is good. We have not met your expectations. So teach us again, we pray, how
to be your people. Remind us of the ties of love that bind us together, so that we
may be truly your followers. In the name of Jesus we pray, and for His sake. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who though he was
in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form, he humbled himself, and became obedient to the
point of death, even death on a cross.
People: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that
is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should
bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue
should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Philippians 2:5-11
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-8 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-year olds in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grades are in Room 003.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Numbers 21:4-9 (page 134 in the pew Bible, OT)
THE ANTHEM From the End of the Earth Alan Hovhaness
Hear my cry, O God. From the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee, when my heart is overwhelmed.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from
the enemy. I will trust in the covert of Thy wings. Amen. - from Psalm 61
THE SECOND LESSON John 3:14-21 (page 88 in the pew Bible, NT)
THE SERMON “3:16” Baron Mullis
* THE HYMN 394 There Is a Balm in Gilead
* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Declaration of Faith
We recognize the work of God in Jesus' power and authority.
He did what only God can do.
We also recognize the work of God in Jesus' lowliness.
When he lived as a servant
and went humbly to his death
the greatness that belongs only to God was manifest.
In both his majesty and lowliness
Jesus is the eternal Son of God,
God himself with us.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Variations on “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” Jack Goode
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 306 Fairest Lord Jesus
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE The Lord Is My Shepherd (excerpt) David Childs
Goodness and mercy all my life shall follow me wherever I walk. And in God’s house, my
dwelling place shall be forevermore.
