WORSHIP APRIL 1, 2012
PALM SUNDAY / COMMUNION
THE GATHERING Meredith Loftis
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it.
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches
that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who
followed were shouting:
People: Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David. Hosanna in
the highest heaven! - Mark 11:7-11
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 88 All Glory, Laud, and Honor
A TIME WITH CHILDREN
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, we confess that we have followed you closely, saying the right
things, murmuring our assent in all the right places, shouting acclamations at all
the right times, but our discipleship is lacking. When the time comes for hard
declarations in the face of the demon-possessed powers of this world, our hosannas
fade into “I know the man not.” Forgive us, we pray, for our failure to be disciples
willing to follow you into all the earth. We pray this in the name of Jesus,
and for his sake, Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as
something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being
born in human likeness.
People: And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became
obedient, to the point of death – even death on a cross.
Leader: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that is above
every name,
People: so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on
earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Philippians 2:6-11
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 416)
Laud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son, laud and honor to the
Spirit, ever three and ever one; one in might and one in glory while unending ages run.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-8 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-yearolds in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grades are in Room 003.)
