WELCOME GUEST MUSICIANS
We welcome Mark Mashburn and James Zellers as our guests musicians today. Mark received his degrees in trumpet performance from East Carolina University and Boston University. He has concertized in Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall (Boston) and regularly performs soprano/trumpet recitals with his wife Megan. James received his degrees in flute from Indiana University and the Juilliard School. He performs with the Atlanta Opera Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, and is an artist-affiliate in flute at Emory.
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
Today, please consider joining with Presbyterians around the world by contributing a special offering to One Great Hour of Sharing. The theme for OGHS 2012 is “Sharing Brings Joy to Others, to God, and to Us.” This year was historic for weather-related disasters and the Presbyterian Church was there for those in need because of your gifts to this offering. Write OGHS on your check’s memo line this Easter, so we can continue to care for all of God’s children.
SCOTLAND IN 2013
Do you want to travel to the land of bagpipes, oatcakes and Calvinism? If so, Morningside is offering a trip to Scotland to celebrate the 499th anniversary of the birth of John Knox. (We celebrated the 499th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin in Geneva - why mess with a winning formula!) Travel agent Kaye Carmichael, who planned the Paris-Geneva trip, has put together a great itinerary for a nine day trip around central Scotland. Highlights include Inverness and Loch Ness, Culloden and Castle Cawdor, St. Andrews, a visit to Scotland's smallest distillery as well as Glasgow, and of course, Edinburgh! The highlight will be the Edinburgh military tattoo at the Castle during the Edinburgh International Festival. Travel is planned for August of 2013. Plan to attend an interest meeting in Room 201 at 12:30 p.m. on April 29 to learn more.
RETHINKING WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
Women of Morningside and friends from around the neighborhood and the city are invited to join Joanna Adams as she continues our Bible Study on Wednesday, April 11 with a focus on “Who is Jesus in the Bible and for us today?” In preparation for the class, please read: Matthew 5-7, Mark 8:27-38, and John 1:1-18. The class will meet in Room 201 at 10 a.m. Child care will be provided by reservation. Contact Anna Best in the church office office@morningsidepc.org.
LYDIA CIRCLE
Lydia Circle, a group of young female professionals and moms, welcomes members and visitors of MPC to join them on Thursday, April 12, from 7-9 p.m. at the home of Kelly Goldsmith (1785 Johnson Rd., 30306). Please email Tara Parrish (taraparrish@bellsouth.net) to RSVP and for any other details.
COUPLES GROUP
If you’ve got a spouse, partner or significant other, come get better acquainted with MPC couples for a social evening with dinner (bring a side or dessert and beverage) at the home of Peter and Sarah Chatel (4588 Pine St., Smyrna 30080) Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m. RSVP to the Bremers (kdbremer@ bellsouth.net).
INTOWN COLLABORATIVE MINISTRIES FOOD PANTRY
Support the ICM food collection for pop-top foods, microwave meals (non-perishable), and can openers that begins today and continues through April 29. Place donated items in the Welcome Center baskets. The next pantry workday will be next Saturday, April 14, 10:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. To help, sign up on the mission bulletin board or contact Nancy Collins ncollins0209@gmail.com.
BRAVES GAME
Morningside invites you to join us at a Braves game next Sunday, April 15 at 1:30 p.m. Seats are $20 per person. Leave from church with a bag lunch to eat at the stadium or enjoy the concessions there with your MPC friends! Please give your money to Jack Klotz or contact Katherine Johnston (kecjohnston@gmail.com) for more information.
RHO READERS
Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? In honor of the occasion, instead of discussing a book, the RHO Readers will share a favorite poem. Everyone is invited to this poetry party on Sunday, April 15, at 12:45 p.m. in the Session Room.
THANKS FOR YOUR HABITAT SUPPORT
The 4 bedroom/2 bath house at 1074 Kipling Street is complete as of March 31. It will become a home to Catherine and her four children who emigrated from Liberia five years ago. Dedication took place on the final build day. MPC once again had many volunteers who participated along with our four partner churches to do the build. Whether you raised the walls, built the porch, installed the roof, provided lunch, painted, or did landscaping, you were part of this new home. Thank you.
ANOTHER LIBERIA CONNECTION
While MPC helped Catherine and her family settle in Atlanta, we are also reaching out to students and teachers of Rick’s Institute in Liberia through the “Mercer on Mission” trip. In May, Mercer Professor and MPC member, Emilie Paille, will again travel to Liberia, and we will partner with Mercer by collecting needed school items for the institute. In order for us to fill the teachers and graduate students’ suitcases for the trip, stay tuned for the list of needed items coming soon.
RECLAIMING DISHES
Thanks for all the food that has been brought to MPC in crock pots, on platters, and in cupcake carriers. Reclaim your items from the Fellowship Hall table as we are working our way through kitchen cabinets and closets and will give away extra items by mid-April. If you are in search of an item and it is not on the table, check the kitchen cabinets and cupboards.
ALL CHURCH RETREAT
If you are interested in working on MPC’s fall retreat to Montreat this year, you are invited to attend a planning meeting on Tuesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. in the Session Room.
OUR SYMPATHY TO...
Rev. Dana Hughes on the recent death of her mother; and to Hugh Bell on the death of his father, Hubert J. Bell, on March 31. Hugh’s father recently celebrated his 97th birthday.
