Shavon Starling-Louis preaching
"Bold Blessings"
Texts: Psalm 133; Acts 4:23-31
WELCOME GUEST PREACHER
This morning, we welcome Shavon Starling-Louis as our guest preacher. Shavon is a second-year student at Columbia Theological Seminary. She has enjoyed working with the 2nd and 3rd graders at MPC for the past 2 years. She is the mother of 3-year-old Sariah and wife and best friend to Kirk Louis. She is a member of Lakeview Presbyterian Church in St. Petersburg, FL. She graduated with honors from Saint Leo University with a degree in Psychology.
CHANCEL CHOIR/GUEST SOLOIST
After providing Morningside with inspiring and festive music during Lent, Palm Sunday, and Easter Sunday, the Chancel Choir is taking a well-deserved “day of rest.” We welcome Jason Hardy as our guest soloist today. Jason is a graduate of Emory University and Peabody Conservatory. He has performed leading roles with New York City Opera, Opera de Montreal, Cleveland Opera, Atlanta Opera, and many others.
RHO READERS
Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? In honor of the occasion, instead of discussing a book, the RHO Readers will share a favorite poem. Everyone is invited to this poetry party today at 12:45 p.m. in the Session Room.
EARTH DAY OUTING
Next Sunday, April 22, MPC kids who are 2nd-5th grade are invited on an outing after church. Bring a sack lunch and a change of clothes to join in the adventure to pick up trash at Morningside Nature Preserve. RSVP to Melinda Sandkam msandkam @morningsidepc.org by this Thursday, April 19. If you wish to volunteer to drive, also contact Melinda.
WOMEN’S ROUNDTABLE
The final Women’s Roundtable of the season will be Monday, April 23 at the home of Lynn Young (277 The Prado, 30309). Speakers will be Hillery McNeill and Sarah Brownlee talking with us about our church’s history, especially how much things have changed since they joined years ago. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., so be sure to RSVP to Kim Perez kimkperez@yahoo.com.
ALL CHURCH RETREAT
If you are interested in working on MPC’s fall retreat to Montreat this year, you are invited to attend a planning meeting on Tuesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. in the Session Room.
INQUIRERS' CLASS & NEW MEMBERS' CLASS
On April 22, Morningside will offer an Inquirers' Class. This class is for anyone who wants to know a bit more about Morningside Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church in general. It can be for folks who want to join on the following Sunday after our New Members' Class, or it can just be a tune-up for those who want a refresher on Presbyterian beliefs. Our New Members' Class will be offered on April 29. At the New Members' Class, those joining the church that day will be introduced to Session and received into membership, as well as, given an overview of ways to plug-in more deeply to the life of faith at Morningside Presbyterian Church. Both take place at 9:45 in the Session Room.
SCOTLAND IN 2013
Do you want to travel to the land of bagpipes, oatcakes and Calvinism? If so, Morningside is offering a trip to Scotland to celebrate the 499th anniversary of the birth of John Knox. (We celebrated the 499th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin in Geneva - why mess with a winning formula!) Travel agent Kaye Carmichael, who planned the Paris-Geneva trip, has put together a great itinerary for a nine-day trip around central Scotland. Highlights include: Inverness and Loch Ness, Culloden and Castle Cawdor, St. Andrews, a visit to Scotland's smallest distillery as well as Glasgow, and of course, Edinburgh! The highlight will be the Edinburgh military tattoo at the Castle during the Edinburgh International Festival. Travel is planned for August 2013. Attend an interest meeting in Room 201 at 12:30 p.m. on April 29 to learn more.
ICM FOOD PANTRY
Support the Intown Collaborative Ministries food collection for pop-top foods, microwave meals, and can openers that continues through April 29. Place donated items in the Welcome Center.
ANOTHER LIBERIA CONNECTION
MPC is reaching out to students and teachers of Rick’s Institute in Liberia through the “Mercer on Mission” trip. In May, Mercer Professor and MPC member, Emilie Paille, will again travel to Liberia, and we will partner with Mercer by collecting needed school items for the institute. In order for us to fill the teachers and graduate students’ suitcases for the trip, stay tuned for the list of needed items coming soon.
MPP’S JUNGLE JAM
Come explore the jungle at MPP’s Jungle Jam! Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dads’ Grill, Madagascar Obstacle Course, Pirate Ship, King of Pops, DJ, Balloon Animals, Carnival Games and Rides, and much, much more! We are seeking sponsors for our activities, so we can make this the best Spring Fling ever. Funds raised via sponsorship donations offset our costs and help fund extras our preschool children enjoy. Consider sponsoring, in part or in full, one of our activities or making a general donation. All contributions, in any amount, are greatly appreciated! We also encourage you to sign up for one of our volunteer shifts – this is a great way to meet our preschool community and our neighbors. Contact Sarah Tomaka for more information, mpp@morningsidepc.org, 404.685.8758.
MPP ADDS KINDERGARTEN!
Morningside Presbyterian Preschool is proud to announce our Kindergarten Class! Beginning in the fall of 2012, we will add a half-day Kindergarten class as an expansion of our Preschool program. Our kindergarten class will be a dynamic half-day program designed to use child-centered learning which encourages creativity, fun and academic success. Registration materials are now available. Contact Sarah Tomaka at 404.685.8758 or mpp@morningsidepc.org with questions.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
Both Vacation Bible School (June 25-29) and Mission Camp (July 23-27) registration forms are now available at the church and on-line. Sign up your kids today! All types of volunteers are also needed. Contact Melinda with questions.
THANKS
Thank you to everyone who helped with Holy Week and Easter Services! Our flower guild, worship committee, and choirs (chancel and handbell) did what they do best, providing us with wonderful music and Easter flowers. Many of you volunteered as ushers, greeters and parking attendants; child care and children’s worship volunteers; Easter Egg Hunt, Maundy Thursday Dinner, and Sunrise Breakfast volunteers-to name a few. We couldn’t do it without you!
