2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER

THE GATHERING Bill Humphries
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

THE INTROIT All Things Bright and Beautiful Arnold Sherman
We Are the Light of the World Jean Greif
Cherub Choir (Rebecca Shipley, director)

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
People: The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against
the Lord and against his anointed.
Leader: Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.
People: Blessed are all who take refuge in the Lord. - Psalm 2:1-2,11, 12b

* THE OPENING HYMN 118 The Day of Resurrection!

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God, it has been only a week since we celebrated your victory over death in the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Yet our joy and hope have already begun
to wane. We have been distracted by the busyness of life and once again lost sight
of your love and power. We have not taken time to seek you and your will. We
have not lived as the transformed Easter people that we are. Help us to be re-
formed anew by your precious Holy Spirit. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us
who are being saved it is the power of God. God chose what is foolish in the
world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.
People: God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not,
to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the
presence of God.
Leader: God is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God,
and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.
People: In Christ we are forgiven! - 1 Corinthians 1:1, 27-30

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 119)
The strife is o’er, the battle done, the victory of life is won.
The song of triumph has begun. Alleluia!

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-8 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three through five-yearolds in Room 011; K - 1st grade in Room 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in Room 003.

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 133 (page 543 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SOLO The Trumpet Shall Sound (from Messiah) G.F. Handel
Jason Hardy, bass
Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in
the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. The trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised
incorruptible. - 1 Corinthians 15:51-52

THE SECOND LESSON Acts 4:23-31 (page 114 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONBold Blessings” Shavon Starling-Louis

* THE HYMN 241 Behold the Goodness of Our Lord

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Vir-
gin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he de-
scended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
