WORSHIP MAY 13, 2012
6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER

THE GATHERING Melinda Sandkam
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly
of the faithful.
People: Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with
tambourine and lyre.
Leader: For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with victory.
People: Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their couches.
Leader: Let us worship God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. - Psalm 149: 1, 3-5

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 483 Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, though we are made in your image, we fail to live as you made us
to live. Where we have missed opportunities to serve, we need forgiveness.
Where we have been unkind, we need forgiveness. Where we have caused pain,
we need forgiveness. Where we harbor guilt and unease, we need forgiveness.
For what we know but cannot name, we need forgiveness. So remake us, we
pray. Call us and lead us where you would have us go. Through Jesus Christ our
Lord, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners, Christ died for us.
People: For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the
death of his son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we
be saved by his life.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Romans 5:8; 10

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends
above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of
grateful praise.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE We Know That Christ Is Raised Stanford

THE FIRST LESSON 1 John 5:1-6 (page 227 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM The Earth Is the Lord’s Carl Nygard
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. All creatures who live on the earth are the Lord’s.
For who can rightly ascend the hill of the Lord, and who may enter His house to hear His word? The
pure in heart and hand; such are the people of God, who understand. Alleluia, Amen. -Psalm 24

THE SECOND LESSON John 15:9-17 (page 103 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMONNot Servants, Friends” Baron Mullis

* THE HYMN 335 Though I May Speak

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Andante in B-flat Major G.F. Handel

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 302 I Danced in the Morning

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE For the Beauty of the Earth (excerpt) John Rutter
For each perfect gift of Thine which to us so freely given, graces human and divine, flowers of earth and
buds of heaven; Lord of all, to Thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.
